When it is truly hot as you can see not much. The 3.8 and 4.2LJag XK engine dip stick informed you to wait 1 minute for drain back and it is also a DOHC engine. Most of the DOHC engines drain down rapidly. It is the condition of the oil level when the engine is running and the amount of oil in contact with the pan surface and the engine RPM as that determines the actual circulating flow. Some of the oil heat is also dissipated into the coolant.

In the first photo, I had topped up the oil in the morning to the top of the hash marks with a hot engine and parked it while at work. That difference was about 9 oz.

In my 2nd and 3rd photos this was after the engine was at operating temperature and had been for about 20+ minutes in 82F ambient temperatures. I'd say it was truly hot and that there is considerable difference at ~15-18 oz swing.

Depending on exactly which type/brand of oil you are using the complete drain down can take 6-8 hours from a fully warmed up engine. Fully warmed up requires about 30 minutes at 45-60 mph. Drain down takes longer if the engine is not fully warmed up.

So before I sold the 2001 SL1 10th Anniversary clone I pulled the block heater from it thinking I could use it on the 99 SL2. I haven't been able to find one over the past 3 years of ownership. I was surprised that it wouldn't fit; the block is totally different in that area from 99 to 2001. Huh!

Anybody need a block heater for their GEN3 (2000-2002)?

Alright, I can't believe nobody called me out on my comment regarding the block heater. The block heater is the same 98-2002 for all engines. As it turns out I was attempting to install it upside down. It's in now and ready for winter.

On another note, I acquired some stock hubcaps this summer for use on my winter wheels. When I tried to install them this past weekend the lug nut caps that hold the hubcaps on came nowhere close to threading onto the external lug nut threads. It appears that the steel wheels I bought a couple years ago have a deeper "dish" to them. Does anyone know if there are longer caps that would accommodate for this? Any other ideas to make this work?

So I did this on the weekend to the 99 SL2.

I often wondered through the years of seeing S Series for sale that were missing the kick panel by the drivers foot .... "how and the heck does someone manage to misplace this piece of trim! Weird!"

Now I know! The hooks break off the hook and loop fastener and the panel keeps falling off. It's freakin annoying!

I drilled an appropriate sized hole in the kick panel, removed the fastener from the body side and inserted a lower fascia body panel pin to hold it in place. You have to orient the pin correctly as the hole on the body side is rectangular. You can actually rotate the pin to remove the panel rather then pulling the center plunger.

Problem solved!

I took the easier way out -

Since my forte is sewing, I just replaced the original velcro with an Industrial Strength version by gluing it in place since I was unable to run the kick panel through my Singer.

That would be interesting to try as it is a 'leather' machine and far heavier duty than my 1952 Singer 301A.

At least you are easily able to sew full grain leather seat covers with piping for your Saturn.

I put 44.611 liters (11.785 US Gal) of gas in the 99 SL2 today. The tank holds 45.80348 (12.1 US Gal). Still no low fuel light and a rather stressful drive. The fuel light bulb does work, I see it on start up.

The back story, I sent my 17 year old daughter out on Sunday to fuel it up and then she could use it. She did all her wandering and forgot to fuel it up. Today, late for an appointment, I drove off in it realizing about a kilometer away that it was empty. We normally get about 400 km on a tank (city) so I checked the trip odometer and it was at 555! Bah!

Made it to my appointment on time (~7km) and then to the gas station (~7km). We normally put about 38-40 liters in it at fuel up and the needle has just arrived on empty. Looking at the trip history my daughter had done a couple hundred km's of highway driving.

I think the GEN2 had a no fuel light rather than a low fuel light. That's how you have to treat it if you want my advice.

So I'm guessing I have a problem at the fuel tank end then; a sensor or something. It seems to be a common GEN2 issue from what I have read. I'll have to see if there is a solution documented somewhere in this forum. Not that it is a big deal but it would be good to know.

Maybe the Canadian cars are set to 1.5ml. Could have been a screw up of some Saturn engineer converting to metric!

My SC1 low fuel light comes on, but not sure how much fuel I have left, my gauge is not right down into the E when it comes on. I thought the manual said 80km's or something when the light comes on

I think the official statement is 1.5 us gallons or 5.7 liters rather than mileage.
