Default Re: 1996SL11.9L's 2002 SL1

As mentioned in my spark plug thread. I got stellar mpg drivng to PenDot and back. 46.72mpg. And it was basically my drive to work plus a extra 13 miles down 322 towards Harrisburg Pa.

The cutting out/studder at idle has not happened since this fill up. Interesting and weird. First tank since purchase was just 4oz of acetone. The first tank was 4oz of acetone plus techtron. The 46.7mpg tank was nothing added just fill up with turkeyhill race gas. I'll pull a plug or two tomorrow and spot check them.

The knock retard parameter is a steady zero. And ignition advance shows no evidence of knock retard. My 96 was always showing something.

Knock retard has been at zero since I got it. This 02 is not as agressive as my 96 timing wise. I've not seen above 34 yet. And the 96 would be 36-38 a lot lightly loaded. Especially if rpm's were at or above 2000.

I'm pretty sure the PID address did not change from 96-2002.......

Went junking and found a good hubcap, drivers door lock, and clean non-rusty ICM. Also found a car with two new front struts. Didn't take big tools with.

What does Turkey Hill consider race gas? I've never seen it when up that way.

As for knock retard, my guess is that over the years the tables changed with factory programming, or you got a calibration that changed. The EPA site used to show a lot of calibration variables for the S Series cars.

And actually it makes sense to have less advance. Neither max power or max economy take place at max advance. To some extent searching for the limits of advance without detonation is ignoring what really works.

The TurkeyHill race gas is a joke from dirt biking at TowerCity, Pa. The gang would get Cam2 race gas or AV gas at the airport. (Both of which smell great when riding in tight woods where the bark busters are always protecting your fingers) and I'm cheap and just stopped at TurkeyHill for high test. I have a 1995 CR500. Don't need no stinking race gas. Had it since 1997, best 2500 I ever spent!

TurkeyHill is supplied by Sunoco in my area currently

So I went junking and got a drivers door lock to rekey. And while shopping found two with new front struts. I also rooked a like new owners manual and a ICM. My brother got the manual. Tomorrow I plan on going back and scoring the struts and look for a EGR valve or two for my brother.

Sadly I replaced the rusted could and ICM today with a like new unit and same hickup stumble. Also the random rattle knocking sound is driving me nuts. It can't be internal. Cause buy now the engine would be dead. My stethoscope doesn't pick up the noise either. No rapping knocking sound. Just the light klicking of the injectors. Also probing the bellhousing and trans reveals nothing. Same general sounds as engine. (I will check oil level tomorrow though).

I also changed the oil and filter. Oil has zero metal and some small slivers or gray gasket material. Either from me changing Valve cover gasket with the molded felpro. Or the gray colored oil drain plug gasket. The oil plug gasket went in the garbage and replaced with a new black one.

Got a new strut at the you pull it yard near me. 15 dollars. I'm trying to figure out who made it to locate another. Shame the car I removed it from only had one new one on the drivers side.

Uploading pictures is currently wrecked again or I'd show it and the part numbers.

Edit. That's funny, it said uploads failed. But one snuck through.

Default Re: 1996SL11.9L's 2002 SL1

As noted in my spark plug thread I put dual ground spark plugs ment for a 96-02 Toyota 4Runner with the 3.4L V6. The mileage stayed the same I feel over the Bosch platinums I removed hoping my weird idle would be fixed. It did not clear up the studder it has on occasion. I also swapped ICM and coils and still the exact same idle.

I added a can of Liquid Molley Certec from Napa any the last oil change. And got a instant 2mpg out of it. I went from steady 42mpg tank average to a minimum 44mpg tank average. Hitting 46 on one tank. After 2000 miles on the oil I noticed it starting to go down in level. I added oil for the 1st time at 2800 miles. I put in about 1/2qt. (I do not like the oil going lower than half way to add).

My ScanGauge has started displaying 9999 at idle and coasting for real mpg more often since the last plug swap to the colder 6 heat ngks. Weird.

I am holding my pipe up with 2 heavy duty hose clamps and they have not failed. Fixing that leak should show up in the LTFT and will change the mileage in most cases.

I'm on vacation for two weeks. I was a ball of sweet working on it yesterday. Needed to propane torch to get all of the nuts off.

It was time to fix the exhaust leak. Only two issues left are that engine rattle and the rear wheels Toe in issue.

I'm hoping the rattle is the timing chain and not something in the block. If it would have been a crank or rod bearing it have shown up by now. I put 4400 miles on it.

I will look again. I replaced the VC gasket and nothing was obvious. But, saying that I did not put every cylinder at TDC and wiggle rocker arms. I do have lifter noise on startup more than I think I should. It's like I got a Fram filter in there and the oil is draining out of the can.
