Default Does a gen3 front bumper cover fit a gen2?

My gen2 1998 SL2's front bumper cover has enough scuffs on it that I have been keeping an eye out for one in good condition and the same colour at my local u-pull autowrecker, and while I have not seen one arrive in over a year, they did just get in a gen3 2000 SL2 in the same colour and so I am wondering if:

1) Would a gen3 2000 SL2 front bumper cover fit my gen2 1998 SL2 (bolt up, mate with the bumper internals, and have its panel edges/curves mate to existing panels)?

2) Does anyone know if it will be noticeable aesthetically (both cars have a moulded in horizontal groove about 1 foot above the ground, and while the gen3 groove is deeper than the gen2 groove I am not sure if the difference would be noticeable or not being as the bumper cover's groove is short and separated from the continuation of the car's line by the front wheel)?

The 2nd question is clearly very subjective, but my complete lack of fashion sense means I can never tell what something looks like until it is finished, and so any opinions are appreciated, especially if you have tried or seen this already.

The lines don't really match like you've indicated but I think the real problem area is the headlight shapes. Regardless, I don't think it would look right.

There are some minor differences, I think a few members here have done a 3rd/2nd gen exterior swp in the past. The chassis is the same on both. I would recommend inspecting each individual part for the differences, which will likely include the bolt holes and fastener locations.

Trottida already covered the headlamps are different.

I think the fenders are the same, though.

Thanks for finding that, because I couldn't recall the last person that actually had done this one.

The people that did this grafted in the fender if I remember right... quicker to find a 2nd gen bumper and slap it on... or have some one look out for it and ship it greyhound.

Thank you all for your help, as it sounds like the consensus is that it won't work.

I am glad someone had already tried this or looked at it closely, because when I looked at a lot of gen2 and gen3 sedan photos I failed to see anything I thought would be noticeable except for the lower style line, but then as I pointed out I am rather style blind until I see something completely finished, and so you have saved me a lot of anguish.

At least I can scavenge the gen3 sedan's roof "drip mouldings" for our gen2 SL2 as those are identical (the clearcoat has started peeling off the drip mouldings on our gen2 and so replacing those will help keep the car looking nice).

Thanks again for the help, as it is much appreciated.

Depending on the condition of the panels and how much time/money you want to spend, you could move over all the panels (hood, trunk lid, front and rear fenders, door panels, lights, everything except roof), converting your body from 2nd gen to 3rd gen.

I'm pretty sure that's been done before, though it is probably cheapest/best to buy a parts car, do the swap, and then sell the parts car

Guessing you are in Canada - maybe somebody has a line on other junkyards you can check? I found matching body parts on a trip to the Detroit area, about 90 miles from where I live.

Another thing you could do if you have lots of spare time - try the swap at the junkyard just for fit. Color does not need to match as you are just seeing what lines up

Thanks for the thoughts alordofchaos.

I had not thought of looking over the border for u-pull yards as cross border trips waste just enough extra time that I usually avoid them, but it is a good idea for this situation and so I will check when I have more time (I did a brief search after reading your comment but no u-pull yards turned up, so I will have to spend more time searching another day).

Thanks again.

You're welcome!

If you put your general location either in post or your profile, perhaps someone in the area can point out good yards. I found out about several yards in the Detroit area from another member here. Parts Galore, I think it was - they have 2 or 3 locations, plus another couple of yards I can't recall

Since you didn't ask
I guessed Canada because the OP mentions "colour" - the UK/CA/AU spelling, rather than the US "color"

edit: some places have online inventory (they can only tell you a car is on the lot, not parts condition or availability). The U-Pull-It in Pontiac, MI has 3 matching cars, green, tan, and white. Possibly if you post the color, someone local could check the car out for the bumper condition, and maybe even pull it for you?

I'm back allord :P but you didn't list all the Detroit Yards.... Parts Galore (3 yards), U S Auto Supply, all 4 were amazing last time I was up there (think it's been about a year or so)..... Ryan's was so/so.... oh it's been a while.... there was another set of 2 yards up between u-pull and Parts Galore.... It's been a while since I've made the Detroit Run (2 days 8-5 both days, jumping from yard to yard)

Quiet, list your color that you are needing and location might be able to get some help off one of us

Hey, welcome back!

I've only gone out to Detroit once (I was working FT and also in school at the time).

I only managed to hit 2 of the 3 Parts Galores and found everything I was looking for, plus extra stuff, so ran out of time and money

I couldn't remember the names of any of the other places because I never got a chance to go to them, plus Parts Galore had more than what I needed.

Found my old post in the "what did you do to your Saturn today" thread

Quote:
Junkyard run!

Hit Parts Galore at 8 mile (no 2nd gen in my color, several good leather auto trans shifters and hand brake grips, and one white instrument panel gauge set). Looks to be an overall decent yard, though. Unlike many other places, it is actually paved between the rows of cars. Pulled 3 MAP sensors as I need one.

Then went to Parts Galore down in S. Rockwood, lost about an hour due to traffic on I-94 being down to one lane in Detroit. Found a silver car, went to pull the door panel. Destroyed the pin in the handle even though I used a tack puller (again - I've only gotten this pin off cleanly once). Several of the door clip/plastic were broken and something was catching at the front end.

Could not get the door off at the front... and the paint was getting scratched at the front end by my wiggling. Finally decided to pull the fender off and got the door off; put it on the wheelbarrow and started heading back. Two cars down... hey, look, an SL2 with a red hood (I'd been looking at every S series looking for a leather shift knob).

Double-take... it's actually a silver car with a red hood. Holy crap, the door panel is near perfect, and only one tab was broken. The bumper and fender was already off, and... holy crap, two foglight brackets (bulbs and wiring were gone). Grabbed the nice door (left the other one there), brackets, found a leather steering wheel (non-perforated) and an unyellowed reservoir bottle, total under $30

Other Detroit area yards listed in these threads
http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=195034

And a more generic listing

Thanks for the suggestions alordofchaos and Saturninin.

My 1998 SL2's colour is 5333 (I call it tan although Saturn calls it "gold").

If anyone knows of good u-pull yards in northwest Washington state then please let me know.
The pacific northwest is populated a little sparser than the eastern part of the continent and so I expect the availability of good u-pull yards will also be sparser than you folks enjoy, but hope springs eternal.

BTW, sorry for the delay in responding but things have been a bit hectic, although I did manage to get to my local u-pull yard to get the roof "drip mouldings", so the week has not been a complete lack of fun.

Thanks again.

"sparse" is putting it lightly

I took a look at www.car-part.com (not sure but I think they are mostly full service yards rather than u-pull it). Nothing within 1,000 miles of zip 98264.

Might be easier/cheaper to paint the old bumper. I think there are a few places online that will mix a rattle can of bumper paint (w flex agent) based on your color code. Last I checked, was under $15 for the paint and maybe $10~15 for shipping. Local shops might be less, if any are nearby
