Default Do I need the exhaust resonator???????

My wife drives a 99 SC2 and the exhaust resonator is now leaking around the crimps. What would happen if I removed the resonator completely and replaced it with a piece of pipe?? How loud would it be and would I lose any low rpm torque due to loss of back pressure??

Thanks for any insights,

Brad

"Need?" NO. IF removed, both the tone and volume of the exhaust will be affected. (Louder and "harsher") The resonator is not expensive to replace and either it OR a simple length of exhaust pipe must be welded in place. Just take it to a muffler shop and be done with it.

My 99 SL2 had two of them replaced before I purchased it. There is a TSB explaining why they leak. When I posted about it years ago, some one said a muffler shop welded the leaking area for about $20. That may be an option to look into, if the rest of it is good.

Here is link where I talked about the info. I have the TSB somewhere.

I cut my resonator off about 2yrs ago and clamped a piece of straight pipe in there. The exaust is a little louder but not bad. I've noticed no performance degradation

Thanks for the replies. I had planned on just having them repair the existing resonator. If they won't agree then I'll have them weld in a piece of pipe.

Thanks again,

Brad

replacing the resonator with a straight pipe would make the exhaust sound louder and raspier. you'll really hear it when you rev past 4000 rpm.

thanks again for the advice. I tried to get it welded up yesterday but every place was closed. I'll try again on Friday.

The exhaust may tend to backfire a bit on decel. It depends on the size of the cat converter. The 2000 Sl's had this problem due to a smaller converter. The repair was to install a resonator. Instead of a straight pipe go for a bottle resonator.

Again thanks for the replies. The crimps on the resonator could not be welded up very easily so I opted to replace the resonator with a length of pipe. The job cost me $40+tx (wish I owned a welder!). I could have spent $75+tx to replace it with a glasspack but decided to save some money.

The car sounds perfectly stock unless it is revved above 3500-4000 rpms where is becomes raspy (very accurate eRic 02sc2). This of course is not an issue since my wife drives it and its an automatic.

124k and counting...

WhereI live...It is illegal to put a resonator on a car that is a 95 or newer.....if it rusts out...the shop has to, by law, put in another cat...if you have a resonator on a 95 or newer car it will fail inspection.

If it fails (although doubtful), it fails. I'll deal with it then.

You are perhaps confused...the OEM resonator is used WITH a catalytic convertor not in place of one and is replaced if necessary in ADDITION to the OEM convertor, not as a replacement for it.

But when the cat goes...a lot of people just put another resonator in there....you are allowed to if your car is older than a 95, if it is newer you have to buy a new cat. you cannot substitute another resinator

What? No if your cat goes, you have to replace it with another cat, no matter what the year. Maybe it's different out east, but I thought it was Federally mandated, not provincially. I thought you meant if the resonator goes you need to put on a second cat in it's place, which is stupid.

Well over here (and every where else I know of) my '85 S-10 had a plugged up cat. It's exempt from emmissions testing, but the hollowed out catalytic convertor I put in there is illegal (shhhh ) If it had one originally it still has to have one. I've never heard of it being different anywhere else.

Us Maritimers must be stupid or something I am glad we do not have emmision testing here.....I have had sooo many crappy cars that would not have passed.
