Does anyone know if it's possible to disconnect the safety switch on the clutch? You know the thing that makes you push in the clutch to start the car. It's really just out of curiosity. I'll disconnect it if its easy to get to but my guess is it's not an easy thing to do.

Actually, I was playing with the idea of putting a remote start system in which would mean I would have to disable the switch.

How about rewiring the switch to the stick shift, there has to be a sensor for neutral to activate the rev limiter.
This would be safer than ignoring it all together, you would have to be in neutral to start, or put the switches in parallel, so you could start in neutral or when the clutch is depressed. Be careful of the wiring, you may want to add a isolated neutral detect switch some how. If the clutch switch is NO / Closed with clutch, the neutral detect should be parallel and NO / Closed when in neutral. If the clutch switch is NC / open with clutch, the new switch should be NC / open in neutral, and wired in series. |

there is no neutral detect switch. The factory rev limit is controlled by the vss.

Heres my question. How does my ECU know when I am in 5th gear and can no longer upshift.. therefore, disabling the wonderful upshift idiot light.

ther should be some way to rig a nutral detect switch, even if ther was a factory one, I would suggest puting an additional one to avoud crosing circuts.
If the rev limit is tied to vechicle speed, why does it not function if you are steping on the clutch, but in gear? (not arguing, just currious) |

In a manual tranny, the rev limiter is set via the VSS (as stated before)....
If the signal from the VSS indicates speed is less than 5mph the rev limiter is set at ~4000rpm. Once you're past 5 mph, you can rev the engine to 6000 in an SOHC or 6750 in a DOHC. Pushing in the clutch makes no difference after 5mph... Be aware that if you deactivate the clutch switch (jumpering it), the cruise control will be permanately disabled. As will your wonderful upshift idiot light (worthless IMO). There might be other components affected as well. Just a little food for thought. If you try it, let us know how it works! |

Yeah, I'll probably fool around with it some in the next couple days. So it disables the cruise control? Damn. I've only used it once or twice anyways. As long as nothing too serious happens I should be fine. I could care less about the upshift idiot light. Tried pulling the bulb out but that made the ses light stay on. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Actually, if its possible, wire in the switch to work in reverse (if you are looking to get rid of the feature anyway). In other words make it so the car will only start if the clucth is NOT to the floor. Everyone is so used to having the clutch in this might be a possible theft deterrant. Not one that I would personally try but something to think about.

why don't you just rewire the clutch switch to a toggle switch so then you can turn the switch on at night to start the car in the morning and shut it off once in the car so the cruise works. You just won't be able to shut off the cruise by hitting the clutch. This is what I was planning to do when I finally get my remote starter like I want. Just watch out I had a friend put a remote starter in a manual and forgot it was in gear one time and almost hit another car. He never used it again disconnected it the next day.

I disabled the safety feature today. What I did was i cut of a piece of a paper clip, bent it into an arc, and connected the two terminals of the plug that plugs into the outlet on the sensor. I started the car to see if it worked and then wrapped it in duct tape. I haven't been out driving yet but hopefully nothing will be amiss.

If you want to deactivate the upshift stupid person light, take off the dash and remove the bulb. That reminds me, my trunk open stupid person light is out, the one by the speedo is out :o: and I think a few others.
