Finished off a two day project of replacing the intake manifold gasket, new radiator, transmission cooling lines, trans fluid and filter change, and motor oil and filter change. Now it's throwing a P0404 EGR code, looks like that's next on the agenda.

Well, not really on the car, but got 3 jy rear hubs and the person that pulled them, literally hack sawed through trailing arms, struts, and the two rear bars.

So spent all evening seperating all the parts. Thank God for hydrolic presses and torches.

Radiator fan quit working and engine temp briefly hit the red yesterday afternoon while my 17 year old daughter was driving to work. Five minutes before she left my wife had just returned from a 4 hour highway trip with no issues. Luckily my daughter noticed something was wrong, pulled over, turned the car off and called me for an assist.

I swapped vehicles with her, waited for the engine temp to get to 3 quarters and I limped it home with the interior heater and fan at full to pull the heat away from the engine and turning the engine off at the longer stop lights.

I pulled the radiator fan out of my 99 SL2 project car and swapped it in to the SL1 and all is well again. Took me about 2 hours to remove 2 fans and install 1 as I had a problem with one fastener removing the air filter box.

I have a need for a new battery tray now in the SL1 if I ever want to fasten that one bolt again.

Actually what I did for my Saturn yesterday. New EGR valve, screen gasket, and a new set of NGK plugs. Two days now and no "service engine soon" light. Fingers crossed that it's finally happy.

Replaced ECTS and spark plugs, now temp gauge reads proper 3/8 and I have already noticed my fuel gauge needle is not moving as rapidly.

It also looks like I have a pretty new water pump on there. Just got the car a week or so ago, so I have been going through the car...1997 SL2 120k miles.

Removed the full-metallic brake pads and installed a new set of O.E. ACDelco ceramic pads.
The metallic pads were to shine-up the rotors after grinding off the creeping edge rust that was cheese-gratering the ceramic pads. The ACDelco ceramic pads that were on there for years had started to crack and separate, but I had a new set ready...
Also, tightened the control arm - to - cradle bolts for good measure as suggested by someone here at SatFans.
Also, replaced a missing air-dam retention spring.

I started the Power Steering Turkey Baster program today.
I should have bought a new TB, as this one (from last year) leaked a bit...actually quite a bit. It took about 220 Ml. of new Mobil 1 synthetic
Phase one complete. Change again in a week. Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

Properly hung my exhaust, There's a bolt sticking through the metal bumper right above the muffler. So I hung it of that and spun a spare 13mm nut on it.

Also buffed my bumper with the drill buffer

surprisingly, there is not a richpin video.

But basically, use a turkey baster or similar to suck out all the fluid you can from the PS reservoir, then re-fill with fresh ATF up to the fill line. Drive around for a week or whatever

Repeat - eventually, the fluid will have that nice, bright color again.

It's much easier to put the car on jack stands and detach the return line and put a hose over it (do not be me where I only had a smaller hose that fitted inside the return line... That made a big mess), to act as an extension to drain into a container (some use a pop bottle).

The procedure is pretty simple,

1. Start motor
2. Cycle the steering wheel from lock to lock position (left-right-left for example)
3. Stop motor
4. Refill PS reservoir
5. Repeat 1-4 till fluid is completely cycled (you usually can tell by looking at the color, unless both fluids are colorless, then repeat 10 times, 15 if there is a PS fluid cooler) then do it atleast two more times.

This is a lot easier with two people.

Note: fluid may be foamy right after doing this, it is normal and will go away

Check fluid level every two days for a week, then every week for a month, then once after a month then go back to normal schedule.

Learned this from the Ford freestyle TSB

I let my friend borrow Ursula for the week so she could get to work (the alternator on her Subaru went caput), and in return she is going to detail her for me

On Cinnamon - I put in a headlamp bulb and tacked up the headliner. So far that's all she needs - not bad for an essentially free car. I'll take it!

Nelly Belle - We're working on changing the valve cover gasket, but some of the little star bolts are stripped and almost impossible to get out, so that's another fun challenge. I guess it can't all be good.

Shows the spectrum in awesomeness as far as free cars... I have one that has almost nothing wrong with it, and one that is a piece of crapola. And then Ursula that cost $500 which as been an almost daily driver for almost two years now

...
Past:
1995 SW2 - Cynthia - sold at 246K
2000 SW2 - Ruby - sold at 165k
2004 Vue - Jade - traded in

Current:
1994 SL2 - Nelly Belle - 139K?
1996 SL2 - Ursula - 223K
1997 SL1 - Cinnamon - 236K

This morning, rolled over 195k.

No pic, but will probably take one at 200k and 250k.

Pretty impressive for a neglected $800 car, purchased basically on a whim (last minute eBay bid, never inspected because I figured someone would snipe the auction; was during one of the high priced gas periods and was seeing beat-up, rusty, 200k mile Honda Civics sell for $2k; a mid-80s Horizon sold for around $1200~1500)
