Default Anybody here had the power steering recall done?

Do they just replace the assist motor or the rack as well?

Can it be done at any GM dealer, even Cadillac?

Does GM cover a rental?

I took my 2005 Ion QC-3 a few years ago for the Ignition switch recall after replacing it even earlier myself. While at a Chevy dealer, they indicated I needed the power steering motor replaced (also under recall).

I found some info regarding the recall and it appears they only replace the actual motor and that is sort of my memory of my situation.

Here is a link to the file (too large to upload here):

and some stuff on the NHTSA info:

I believe the "loaner" question is based on the dealer in question performing the service and I don't see anything promised in the recall instructions other than normal courtesy stuff.

Ok it's better than nothing as it has no power assist now.

Mine was different as I had no symptoms and the steering was fine. Good Luck.

You can get this recall performed at any GM (Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac) dealership if it's still open. Be aware that if the recall's already been performed once on your car, the repair will be on your dime unless the parts are still covered under warranty (2 years/unlimited miles from when job was originally performed).

The document for recall 14115B states that only the assist motor is replaced. The part number in the document is 19257875, but the current part number for it at the time of this post is 19368293. The part is still readily available and probably stocked at a dealership near you, especially if it's a Chevrolet dealership because the Cobalt and HHR were also included in this recall and use the same part.

Whether or not you get a rental for any repair is at the discretion of the GM dealership and ultimately depends on if they have a vehicle available to loan you in the first place. I doubt you'll get one for this recall though because the job only pays a tech 0.5 hr of labor. An experienced tech who's done lots of these could probably complete the job in far less time.
