Default The MPG cost of running the AC

I realize my drive is very mpg friendly. 31 miles and only 15 stops and all rural 2 lane roads......

I also know from the past that using the AC takes a 6-8mpg trip average hit for work. I had 270 miles on the tank with local and work driving and hit the 1/2 tank mark with 250miles on the ODO which means 45mpg. I now have 330 on it and I'm almost touching the 1/4 tank running the AC for a 40 mile drive to drop Toyota heads at the shop and to drive to work last evening. I'm going to use the AC until I have to fill up just to see how much I can wreck my tank average.

My ScanGauge yesterday told me I averaged 36mpg to work with the AC and I normally average 46-48. I averaged 38mpg with the AC going to the machine shop.

How much does the AC cost you all.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

AC brought me down from 38-40mpg on a straight highway run to around 34-36mpg. Totally worth it.

In my 97 SW2 I went from 30mpg to 25mpg from running the AC this summer. I'm all city driving in stop and go traffic.

Apparently an 8mpg drop is not uncommon, lots of people have posted 5-8mpg drop in this thread:

It seems on mine to average around 4-5 mpg. It can, however, be much more than that when stuck in traffic idling with it on. It appears to be really dependent upon commute conditions. Agree with the colonel, it's still totally worth it.

I'll admit I'm enjoying my test. Speed 2 and AC in recirc is more than comfortable and engine doesn't feel like it lost 2 cylinders.

Yeah, I have an easy commute. Few stops.

Been taking the hwy lately due to construction, but even when I was doing side roads, there's a total of . . . let's see, 2 stop signs and 4 traffic lights before I am on a 55 mph service drive, then only one more light before I'm at work. And I can often time the traffic lights so that I don't have to stop

I wish speed 2 on a Saturn kept the cabin cool in the summer where I'm at...
