Default Does $4 gas make you love your Saturn more?

With $4/gal. gas looming on the horizon, I have a renewed appreciation for what Saturn was able to create with the S family of cars.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel smug driving their 35+ mph Saturn, especially when next to a 12 mpg. SUV?

I'm definitely a big fan of my SL2's good gas mileage. I get around 34 mpg with mildly spirited driving and a mix of highway and slower back roads and city driving. It's gonna be nice this summer when I'm cruising getting 34-35 mpg compared the 15 mpg i averaged last summer in my 92 4.3L Chevy Astro van.

As my daily driver I love it. Makes me feel not too bad when I take the Vette out on weekends. But then I get 23 mpg in it. Thats about as good as a poorly tuned Satty with the AC running.

it makes me love the saturn more than the SUV (unless the family is with me, then the saturn is TOO small), but it also makes me miss the civic I traded in for the SUV... 99 civic 2-door MT got 38mpg with the AC on, regularly...

absolutely. In fact, it's almost convinced me to keep it running (140K miles) instead of getting something newer

I love my Saturn. I'm a simple guy, and I love my simple Saturn. I like driving with the windows open in the summer, with my radio on the open highway. I don't need anything fancy.

Gas mileage is great. I don't really focus on fuel economy when I drive and I still get 35mpg. It feels nice to not be a slave to gas. However, it still is tough going when it takes $35 to fill up a 12 gallon tank.

$4 gas ! Ha ! My American friends drive north of the border and it will cost you $5 a gallon or more. You bet I love my 97 SL1 with 200,000 KM on it. That's 125,000 miles. Yes it creaks and groans in the winter at 40 below. It is starting to show its age inside. I need a new drivers seat as the door side seat cusion is worn from getting in and out over 11 years. However it is running like a Swiss watch. No oil burning between oil changes. Routine maintenance has kept it going strong all of these years. It still gets great gas mileage. Up here in Alberta everyone has one speed, fast ! My last fill up was at $5.33 US dollars per gallon. They are predicting $6.75 US dollars per gallon by the summer.

So if you plan to head North of the border this summer, fill up befor crossing the line ! Hope to see lot's of Saturns from the US "out and about " this summer, EH !

I praise saturn when they made there cars as fuel effecient as possible, this guy was at the gas station the other day it cost him over 100.00 bucks to fill his car it was a camero, then after he left he persisted in want to race me so i acted like i was going to and he took off like a bat outta hell and when i cought up to him at the next light he was in auement with his girl friend. Well i said to him you may be alot faster but i didnt wast half my tank on trying to race. I can get almost 300 miles to a full tank in my sl1. So i can say I LOVE MY STAURN, but it does cost alomost 35 bucks to fill if i wait till it's alomost empty i fill up when i hit a 1/4 tank so it only costs me 25 bucks to fill

Yes... My previous SC and my VUE RL both get the same fuel mileage. My SC never gave more than high 20's on the highway and averaged around 24-26.

not really.. my saturn only gets 20 mpg average and gas IS already 4 dollars + here.. just fueled up with 48 dollars. 12 gallons..

btw the fuel light seems to come on at 2.5 gallons left... i drove 45 miles with the light on and when i went to fuel up it took up almost the whole tank. 12.03 gallons. tank is 12.1

Default Yep, and $4 gas is just the beginning I'm afraid

I got my SL2 as a result of researching rumors about "Peak Oil" I'd heard. After months of Googling and reading, I said "if even 10% of this is true, we're in deep trouble".

That was 3 years ago. I expect my SL2 will be the last all-gasoline powered vehicle I own. I'm not sure what the future will be, whether hybrid, biodiesel, or something else.

I've been really happy with my little SC2. I've never gotten below 28 MPG and generally get a little above 30 MPG for my 35 mile daily commute that is mostly city and about 30% highway. All these people running about and buying 30k+ hybrids, and I feel fortunate to be able to fix things here and there and buy used.

funny thing, people used to laugh at my puny 1.9 liter engine, now with the talk of high gas prices all their mouths pucker up like a tight snare drum. they can keep their suv's or muscle cars. who needs them anyway?

Makes me want to keep it. Mentally prepared to spend $$$$ to keep it going. Including new tranny or A/C if I had to.
Thinking of getting a $169 scan meter to monitor gas mileage.

I wish all cars had instantaneous fuel use readouts. Not that tough to do, now that they are electronically injected and have electronic distance measuring.

(It runs good on this $3.50 per gallon swill, I bet it will run super on the $4.00 stuff!)

Oh yeah, I get low 30's in town and the best hwy so far has been 42. Not too shabby, I thought the car was a pig (2400 lbs.) when I bought it, compared to my Rabbit (1700 lb) but technology has progressed in 20 yrs. Rabbit = F.I. and managed mid to high 30's on hwy.

That is why I am currently looking for an older S Series. Wife's car has gotten 41mpg on the highway with the a/c running. Even with gas at $5/gallon I could still fill it up from bone dry for $60. I just filled my T-Bird up Monday and it took $63 (a new high for me) and it takes premium.

Not sure the correct words to use to describe the feelings. I suppose smug is one word, but so many others come to mind and they're all positive reinforcement of the decision I made to buy my S-Series cars back in the day. I told the sales guy at Saturn this past weekend that they've got another 4 to 5 years to bring back the S-Series in some form or fashion or they'll probably lose a customer. He said he would mention it to his people. Like they really care....

I believe the s-series car could become collectibles. "The original Saturn S-Series - the last of the plastic cars."
