Exceeded mechanical limits?
Sounds like that stupid gear broke and instead of fixing the gear they allowed the odometer fraud crap to go through.
...
The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

I always thought "Exceeded mechanical limits" means it "rolled over" - used to be a lot more common with older cars with 5-digit odometers. There's probably some obscure WI law that allows you to claim "exceeded mechanical limits" on any car that goes over 100,000, even if it has six digits.

I bet you that is what happened in this case....that sounds about right, because I asked the guy about the odometer and he said it works fine...the car is getting ready to roll 123K miles.

Beware of this one on the Syracuse, NY CL. 1999 Saturn SW2 Wagon 5 speed 119K miles - $2000 (Pheonix NY RT57north). I looked at this wagon months ago. It looked real good from a distance but not good close up. Checked the oil, What oil? Owner said maybe if I start it it will show on the dipstick. Has rust on the kickplates, and a trailer hitch on back.

The ones that I am looking at are on the east coast, but not those that were mentioned.

I have a couple of different Saturn Wagons that look very promising...it's just waiting for the other parties to provide me with that information.

I told my wife today, that after looking online this month (Literally)...I told her that I want us to be able to find a good suitable wagon by June 1.

I think that is pretty reasonable....

any other thoughts or idiosynchrasies I should be aware about on the Wagons?

Looks as if it will be either a 94 or 95 SW2, at least this is the majority of what I have been able to find....

2005 RELAY-2
Default Re: Considering a Wagon...

Wife and I bought our 2000 SW2 new in 2000. Our first new car. We love it. Don't like the 17 MPG in the city, but whatever.

I'm 6'1", and it works for me. It's cozy with 2 kids in car seats, but a great little car.

Smashed my head into the raise rear door more times than I can remember. Maybe there's a cause and effect there.

Took it out once or twice in winter last year with the Spider Spikes on when the road was icey. Trudged right along while other cars were slipping and sliding.

We've moved like gypsies 7 times in the last 11 years--including 3 coast to coast moves. One was a North Carolina to Pennsylvania 400+ mile move. We drove the SW2. Me, the wife, one kid (at the time), 3 cats in cages, clothes and what not for a week, handguns, ammo, no roof pod and no trailer. We were fine.

Been a great little car. If I can ever find the Advanced DIYer/Electrical Engineer week long college course for Dummies, I'll turn it into an EV myself and add a hybridizing trailer.

Our 2005 new Relay purchase was, in some ways, a mistake. It made my wife complacent that she now "has to have" a large vehicle. I shoulda held off buying a second vehicle a few months. When we bought, we shoulda bought a Toyota Prius or a Ford Escape Hybrid.

The SW2 definitely never was a mistake. It's only flaw is that GM didn't have the foresight to take what they learned, and promised, during PNGV and build Saturn hybrids.

For searching Craiglist check out this tool, free version works fine.
Craigslist Search (CLSearch) is a utility that allows you to search all US cities in Craigslist for items in the sale/wanted listings as well as jobs, services and gigs sections. The Craigslist main page only allows you to search for an item for sale in your local city or any other city of choice, there are times however when it may be necessary to search as many locations as possible in order to locate an item. This is when CLSearch comes in handy. Using one simple, easy to use interface a search of over 200 cities can be made and the results are neatly tabulated.
Find it here; http://bouncingknee.com/

Dizzy Re: Considering a Wagon...

I remember my friend's mom having a 95SL (or SL1? She had a tape player and I thought SL was ONLY AC and Auto?), and when the 96 body SW2 came out she asked her friend at Saturn of Bloomington and he told her to run the other way, unless she wanted a 5 speed (which she didn't)...
I of course, find automatic transmissions to be the scourge of the earth and run the other way naturally. However, it's your choice... I just don't trust them, and since I'm not lazy, I don't have to

I have 4 automatics in the family and adding the combined milage, 375,000 not a bit of trouble. Fluid and filter change every 30K. We don't abuse our cars. I'm now looking for a clean SW2 5 speed mainly for fuel economy and towing a small trailer.

Well, needless to say my experience has been different. I don't know anyone with bad automatic saturns personally, but most I know don't have high mileage auto, they lease and return...

Other GM however, my family and I and my exes have had tranny issues in (in the order in which I remember):
95 Blazer
80 Malibu
90 Cutlass Supreme
93 Cutlass Ciera
99 Malibu
95 Cavalier
93 Fleetwood
02 Grand Prix
95 Bonneville
00 Sierra
85 Silverado
88 Cutlass Ciera
89 Silverado
90 Century
And the worst, NON GM:
88 Jetta
96 Explorer (tranny X3! all on warranty!)
00 Caravan (tranny x2 both on warranty)
94 Shadow (Tranny x4!NONE on warranty that I know of, wasn't purchased new)
96 Wrangler
92 Caravan
88 Dakota
91 Passat

And then, there are the ones on here with tranny issues.
That's my experience anyway. Sorry I'll stop stealing your thread now

Well, I am in a bit of a dilemma...

There's one on the east coast that I am really interested in, and it is in excellent shape...

-BUT-

I have pictures that are supposed to be coming to me on the other wagon from the east coast to me sometime this weekend...

-MEANWHILE-

The guy in Florida who is selling HIS Wagon, has sent me pictures...they don't look too bad.

I feel like I am getting pressure from different locations as to what decision I should make. Honestly I get the best feeling from the two east coast wagons in particular

-PLUS-

I need to let Wisconsin Wagon man know that I am passing on his Wagon and letting him know that the Carfax came back with Odometer Fraud listed...something now doesn't feel quite right about that car....

I think I need some help....

What would you do?

I'm afraid if I take too long to make a decision, that the car that I am interested in, may be sold to a perspective buyer locally (as all of these cars are at least 3 states away from me.)

Help!

Might be an "expected" answer from me, but I say go with a 95 or up if you can, 5 speed if you can, nice as you can whilst not beat up too.

Wisconsin one I'd run the other way.

Florida is a place I'd rather not go, much less to have to drive back through the bible belt... But that's me. I'd stay fairly local, grab one of the east coast ones and call it good. Figure out what it'd cost you to drive back from the further one and if the closer one is cheaper figure it that way.

But (as you can see), I'm slanted toward 5 speeds.
And it makes sense. I swear it does!

exceeds mechanical limits means the miles have rolled over. that's more common on a 5-digit odo, 6-digit with that on the title is highly suspicious on a mid to late 90s model. I forget what the other odometer flag is (been a while since i worked at the dmv). Florida is really strict about odometer laws. Where's the one at in Florida? I have to tell you, after I got my wagon, i see alot more of them on the road. someone in the neighboring apt building has one. People who have them love them and hold on to them. i have yet to see a beaten up wagon. if you see them on a carlot, they dont last long. when i got mine, it had only been there a day, and a guy was waiting to see if I was gonna buy it because he wanted it

Have you considered turing your search for a wagon into a reality TV show?

That would be interesting wouldn't it?

Although since I have a background in TV Production, there would acutally be people on the TV show that would know something about Saturns!

Come to think of it, the general idea would be pretty funny...

I can here Don Lafontaine doing the voice over now....
