hey all,
I'm almost positive i've got a bad motor mount, that car ol saturn bucks everytime I touch the gas. I remember reading before that there is two types I can get, one being worse then the other. So how do I know which mount is the mount i want? Is there a website i can order it from or should i head down to the locale parts store? |

You can confirm a bad motor mount, the upper mount will be collapsed, it is the "ink pen" test.
There is a frowny mount, there is a space that looks like a frown face, don't buy that one. I bought mine from Autozone and is OK. Q- it "bucks" when you touch the gas, have you ruled out mechanical causes? A bad motor mount will cause vibration when you are driving too. RockAuto.com is one on-line supplier, with positive reviews on this site. I can't find the AZ part number right now, will look for it.

Lifetime warranty is nice, but may not be worth it for a poor mount considering the time and trouble it takes to exercise the mount (retain you receipt, remove the failed mount, get a ride to the store, deal with the clerk, return home, then install the "free" replacement. Might not be worth the $30 you save compared to an OEM mount.

If the top mount is bad, you should notice vibrations at idle, too.
If buying the part at the local parts store, ask to open the box before purchasing to confirm it is not the frown type.

I'm pretty sure the mount is toast..... actually i just had a quick look at it, the rubber has a large crack through it and a pen fits easly through the hole. Vibrations at idle are there too...
so no frowny mount eh? would anyone happen to have a picture of the two mounts? |

pictures have been posted several times, it is a matter of me (or you) finding them, this is unfortunately a popular thread.
My AZ mount is still OK, I check it occasionally.

There's a diagram in this thread
http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...ighlight=mount unfortunately, the photo section is down at the moment so all the pictures from before the server move are unavailable.

This is a link to an image of the "frown" style mount not on this side:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...1266814k315379 Note the upside down U (frown) in the lower center of the mount. This is what most auto parts stores offer. Ther are a number of reports taht it lasts about 2 years. The better mount is mainly available trhough dealer channels. I do ntojhave a photo handy, but rather than having the "frown" and some other slots in the rubber it looks like solid blcok. |

I bought my top motor mount from saturnparts.com total $60. Upgraded genuine Saturn top motor mount- not the frown faces design. Made a hugh difference in isolating engine vibration. I would suggest watching the video by Richpin in the "How to Library" He shows the test-installation-and adjustment to the lower mount after the top mount is rep[laced.

If you can afford it, I would go for the OEM mount. I think the rubber is better quality. If you get the aftermarket one, and it fails, I think some users have reported that it damaged the timing cover, too. Also, it's just another bit of insurance to use new studs, too.

Found a thread with pics of both mounts attached, separate from the gallery: http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...84&postcount=8 .

FYI, both mounts have been updated at AZ, at least in the Southwest. There are no longer any voids or depressions of any kind in the rubber. I just replaced my AZ Lifetime mount and it has solid rubber molded between the two metal mounts. The "pen" or "2-finger" check will no longer apply.I'll post pics when I can find them.

I think you can buy the OEM mount and correct studs from Saturnparts.com for <$50 -- at least that's what they ran when I bought a bunch of parts from them before they all disappear. A little slow on the shipping, but then again, if you can't wait a week or two to do the motor mount job with the best part, you must be one of the world's best procrastinators.
