Default Need a battery

for my 97 SL
The last (7 year) NAPA lasted 6-1/2 years. Not bad.
But its price has risen about 7% a year. More than inflation

Anyone who knows of a deal or coupon, please let me know.

...
97 SL. Born 6/5/97, bought 7/7/97
08 Burgman 400
02 Haro MTB- can't kill it, still trying though

The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.

I have over 10 years on my last Costco battery. They are expensive but are the heaviest ones I could find! Heavy usually means more lead. Not the only way to judge a battery, but it seems to work for me.

I have had good luck with Duralast Golds...

There is no need for a AGM (advanced glass mat) battery...

I will second what Mattwithcats says...

Duralast Gold batteries are very good. I had one in my 94 SL2. That battery was awesome.

If I needed a replacement- I would buy another Duralast Gold battery in a heartbeat.

looks like prices for a group 75 run $107 - $138 at Advance. With 30% coupon (SCW467) code, you'll end up at $75 - $97

Once in a while, you see a 40% code.

The things you need to be looking for in the battery is a) the warranty and b) the Cold Crank Capacity c) the best price to accomplish a & b. The latter should be bigger to be better. Forget about brand names.

If you are a AAA member, I would just get the AAA Premium:

Competitively priced AAA branded batteries
FREE Testing of your battery and electrical system
FREE Delivery and installation (most vehicles)*
6-Year limited warranty including 3-Year free replacement period
FREE Disposal and recycling of your old battery

Member price is $114 (plus tax).

I purchased one of those for my Saturn in October of 2013 and it was still going when I sold her on September 30 of this year. This is very good down here where the sun wears batteries out very quickly. AAA comes to you, installs, and hauls away old battery. No hassles.

I do what TXSaturn02 suggests:

I belong to AAA and if I ever need a battery I call them. They bring one out, do a system check, install the replacement and take the old battery... no disposal fee. As said $115 - $125.

A couple of things a little "wonky" about the guarantee (which may have changed now ... someone who has used this service more recently than I will know) is that they USED to have a three year warranty (now six years, I read, with full replacement within three years and prorated replacement for the remainder of the warranty term).

Since it's been a looong time since I needed a battery the following may have changed too.

I bought a battery from them and it went south before the warranty was up. When they brought a new replacement, instead of the warranty starting all over again, it just continued from that point in time.

Still, having a battery delivered and installed beats the heck out of pulling out a battery, humping it down to the FLAPS, buying one from them, humping it back and reinstalling it yourself. At least it does to me.

This is standard warranty procedure. You do not get a new warranty with a warranty replacement item. There are a few exceptions but not many.

A lot of FLAPS will install for free, so if you can drive or get a jump to get down there, buy the battery and that's it. Ditto with wiper blades.

I don't trust some folks at the FLAPS to do this, so I always install batteries and blades myself

Be cautious about shopping based on CCA's. For a given battery size and type higher CCA usually means thinner plates and insulators. I have seen more internal failures of high capacity batteries than with normal capacity ones. Particularly high vibration applications (i.e. dirt roads). A better warranty is good, but little comfort if you are stranded on some godforsaken North Dakota road in the winter.
