Default Re: the old front wheel bearing trick on L100

hi floridas, pierrot, rb, fdryer and 2LW- appreciate your help. my melodrama in doing this job has been quite educational and entertaining. could be a textbook thread on L series bearing r and r. need your help on some info. yesterday I remounted the knuckle with the new bearing and hub pressed. there are 5 nut and bolt reconnections. only snugged the bolts no torqueing yet. going to borrow or buy a torque wrench . there are 5 fastenings to which I would appreciate your advice on torque specs since I don't want the assembly coming apart on thunder road while eluding coppas . speeds threaten to reach 120+. here are the locations for tomorrows tightenings: 1. nut on steering rod to knuckle. 2. castellated nut on drive axle to hub. 3. lower ball joint nut and bolt. 4. two nut and bolt sets fastening lower strut end to upper part of the knuckle. have already cleaned and put anti seize grease on these threads. surprised there are no cotter pins on the threads of the ball joint and the steering rod end. get a load of this - asked dealer for charge to torque these 5 fasteners. shyster wanted $200. what a swine. hope you didn't hit your head when you fell out of your chair laughing. also fyi- have lined up strut bottom with a scratch line hoping that wheel realignment will not be needed. what are the odds? thanks tons bf

hi sages- thought I would follow up and conclude on the October/November thread I started on this. the interesting and I would think unlikely finding was that both front wheel bearings had gone stinko at the same time. I replaced the rf one and the noise from that side stopped. but humming and roaring were still on the lf side. worried it might be a shot input shaft bearing in the transaxle which would cost a mortgage. mechanic friend checked it and the lf bearing with a stethoscope and said no, it was the bearing. replaced that bearing with another national and problem solved. quiet running has returned to tobacco road. car runs straight and true , no pulling to either side. did not have it aligned. told there is only one alignment adjustment on this model which is toe in. no caster/camber. thought there would be slots on the lower bolt holes(2)for the stuts, to adjust but there were not. did have front aligned one year ago . old bearings went 177k. you bad boys ever hear of both bearings going to hell at the same time? knowing that alignments no longer cost $18.95, kindly give me your advice. thanks tons bob f
