Default Can't remove resonator from Air Box

OK...I remove the three 10MM bolts holding down the air box, as well as the plastic pin that secures the resonator to the vehicle....but how do I separate the air box + resonator assembly? I really don't want to remove the upper radiator hose if I don't have to.

Thanks.

Yank it.. on my 02' it just has a big rubber sleeve that the resonator sticks in to.. nothing fastening it, just pressure. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh...I'll have to take a closer look tomorrow when I tear it apart to fix the transmission top cover.

Thanks...any more suggestions?

Haha, I just typed out this big long response before I noticed you already got the little plastic fastener out. Did you get yours out injury free? Perhaps I was too zealous when I removed mine, because I broke that poor little plastic fastener.

Anyhow, thorne310 is correct. Is the airbox/resonator assembly still in the car (would be easier to see how the resonator is attached if the whole thing were out of the engine bay)? Just pull the resonator away from the airbox, and it should come out without much trouble. Wiggle it a little as you pull on it. It isn't fastened in any manner to my knowledge, just stuck in there.

I wish I could take a picture of my resonator and airbox to illustrate what I mean, but alas, I have no camera.

No, I need to remove it to access the transmission top cover, which I'll be replacing the gasket on.

Ran into some scheduling conflicts, so I only got 20 min or so of work in today. Was able to remove the battery, air box, and resonator. Looks like my 30k mi old alternator may be overcharging my battery, as the battery keeps overflowing and there's a thick layer of corrosion on the tray.

uhm..... overcharging a battery does not make acid spill out. Corrosion on the tray means it leaked acid at one point. Just clean it off, it'll be fine. The battery tray has 1 bolt in the fender well if you didnt know...

and the resonator is removed by sliding it towards the passenger side of the car.

If you overcharge your battery enough. The temperature in side the battery will rise and pressure will build forcing the electrolyte to evacuate.

What is the function of the Resonator ?

My 1996 SW2 has been running without one for years.

Like the Bumper Air Dam and Exhaust Heat Shields, mechanics tend to remove these and never replace them.

Or Dorman 700867, maybe at your local FLAPS. These hold most everything plastic together on the Saturns - fender liners, air dam, plastic stuff underneath that mechanics take off, and so on.

The simple answer is:
It keeps the airflow quieter and allows it to flow thru the system in the most efficient way.

The reason it works (simplified):
The most noticeable function of the Helmholz resonator is to reduce the noise cause by high pressure harmonics which occur with the air flows interaction with the intake system.
Some people like this more aggressive sound so that is why they remove it.

Other people (incorrectly) believe that it is what they perceive as a bottleneck in the intake system and removing it will increase HP. This device is necessary to help the cold air enter the engine in the most efficient way (for this particular intake) which minimises resistance from pressure reversion waves (the pressure coming from the other direction caused by the opening and closing of the valves)
