Default Questions about the 2.4 intake mani. and tb swap on a 2.2

I am looking to do the mod, but curious as to what all gains and losses ill achieve from it, and if a tune is required, or would a remap suffice in place of the mod.

I've also been looking into doing this myself. Most of the info I learned I got from Cobalt forums. So whenever I say "they" that is who I'm referring to.

They indicate that it is a worthwhile mod even without getting a tune. Most of the Cobalt folks say the most HP gain is achieved with an older 2006-2007 LE5/2.4L intake manifold (p/n 12587878), an older LE5 2.4L throttlebody (p/n 12580195), and a tune. They claim that the 2008-2011 LE5/LE9 2.4L intake manifold (p/n 12597953) doesn't flow quite as well as the older one, but no one seems to know how inferior it really is. I posted a picture of the two below.

08_intake.jpg

The catch is that a brand new older LE5 intake manfold costs $450-500 while the newer one is only $100-$150 depending on where you purchase it from. The older intake seems to be hard to find used from a eBay or a junkyard.

The 2.4L intake manifold by itself is a direct bolt-on swap for 2007 Ions, but a throttlebody adapter (like this one from CBM Motorsports) is required for 2003-2004 Ions. I believe the same throttlebody adapter is also required for 2005-2006 Ions, but someone else will need to confirm this. For all Ions, the power brake booster vacuum hose needs to be extended. On the 2.4L this hose connects to an elbow just below the throttlebody on the front of the intake manifold instead of connecting on the underside of it as on the 2.2L intake manifold.

I don't know the exact amount of gain that is expected. A very rough guess would be about 10HP for the intake alone, 15 HP for the TB & IM, and 25 HP for the TB, IM, and tune altogether. A better flowing exhaust (and 2007 exhaust manifold for 2003-2006 Ions) should yield even greater gains.

There is at least one other member (TexasGunslinger I think?) that has completed this mod.

id like to look into doing this also. i know i cant do the tune, but since your saying it can be done without a tune, give me another option for more power.

The 2.4 in the HHR is the LE5 ecotec.

I don't think that intake was originally installed on that HHR. That part number is a variant of the 2008 and newer intake that I posted a picture of in my previous post. It will still work fine.

i am definitely wrong. There is no doubt that is the early design. I was going off of a picture someone posted in another forum that referenced the same part number. Is 12602735 the part number that is actually stamped on the intake?

948686894 is the other set of numbers in it, and when I look it up, I hardly get any results, and I just got the new gaskets in so I should be uploading photos of it later today.

I've also been thinking about doing this mod. Do you have a different air intake or are you using the stock airbox/filter housing?

Right now using the stock air filter set up, but will probably go to an aftermarket application. The 2.4 intake seemed to cramp up the space for it. I also ran into a slight issue with the map sensor, had to do slight modification to get it to work, but plan to properly do it next week. The other issue I ran into is that when I downshift the engine seems to want to stay at the current revs and not go down for a few seconds, I believe this could be cause of the map sensor or a throttle body issue. Other then that, this mod was a breeze, just call a parts store ahead of time to get the gaskets for the 2.4 intake.

the constant reving is caused by the maf sensor on the intake.
the car will rev up, and nearly stay where it reved up, or go down to 1500rpm but no lower.
I know when mess with my intake (using the spectre intake, where you piece together different sections), since there isn't a piece that is properly made to mount the sensor, if not inserted or positioned correctly, it will cause rpms to stay above 1500rpm.

I'm quoting someone else, but.... "Wow, you fail hardcore at reading."

All the info you need is in this thread. If you have a 2003-2004 2.2L you will also need a throttlebody adapter.

Blv198909, did you notice much power & fuel economy difference without a tune?

I have noticed a somewhat increase with power in the mid range, I plan to go get the throttle body and a wire harness for the map sensor that came with the manifold cause the 2.2 took a bit of tinkering to work, and with fuel I may be using a tad more, but I can't really say cause I have a lead foot. I plan to get a tune done once I get my headers ordered and installed. Here is a pic o the map sensor. I'm going to try and see if I can use the wire harness from the 2.4 map and use it on the 2.2 instead, cause making a part fit will only work for so long.

bringing back an old thread.

would swapping the 2.2 TB with an LSJ TB make any difference.
and would having the LSJ TB still require the adapter plate?

i want to the 2.4 swap, but am hoping to avoid having to get the plate by seeing if an LSJ TB would require one or not.

if i have to, ill just get the adapter plate
