Default 97 SL1 Needs 2 Cranks

My 97 Saturn SL1 always seems to need two cranks in order to start. Kind of like the first one primes the engine and the second one actually starts the engine. A single long crank will not work. Any explanation of why this is the case and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. I just use regular in the car so I guess it could be the gas, but the car runs fine otherwise. Thanks.

My 97 SW2 does the same. Appartenly the fuel pumps around that year werent that good. Usually needs 2-3 cranks till it starts? Usually when the engine is hot?

I am thinking about replacing the crank angle sensor, see if that helps.

There's a check valve that keeps the fuel lines from emptying into the tank when the car sits. This fails and is only fixed with a whole new pump.

Workaround is to turn the key on, wait a few seconds, then crank.

My daughters 97 SC2 was like that when she got it but when i finailly got around to changing the fuel filter it cured the problem.

Just turn the key on, wait until you hear the fuel pump stop priming, then crank it.
