Question Vent control cable problems

The vent control cable in my '95 SL2 seems to be coming un-wound at the control end. I noticed this morning that I could not direct the air up to the windshield this morning. When I got home from work this evening I pulled a couple of the interior panels off to try to trace out the cables. I was able to look in the slot where the control lever comes through the dash unit and see that the cable is kind of 'unwound' from the post a little, which lets it bend instead of move the vent linkage. I can move the linkage by hand and I can get the air to go where it needs to go, so I know the linkage is not frozen. I doubt that I would ever be able to get the cable bent back properly, so I'm, guessing that the junk yard is my only hope here. Saturnparts.net & .com list only the entire control unit with no mention of the cables. Has anyone else run into this problem?

Thanks,
Dave

You've got a first there as far as I know. If you call saturnparts.com or .net, you can get parts that you can't find on the site. So, you might try that, but considering the fact that this appears to be a rare problem, a salvage part is probably fine. You might want to try going that route first.

Thumbs Up Re: Vent control cable problems

Thanks for the reply Barnowl.

I was able to fix it this afternoon, and it only took about 15-20 minutes. Luckily the radio has enough play in the wiring that I was able to pull it out and lay it in front of the controls. The cable end was right out in the open, so it was easy to see what was going on. I popped it loose from the controls, held the cable with a pair of pliers, then wound the other end around a pair of needle nose pliers. Piece of cake! Works like it's supposed to again.

Thanks again,
Dave
