Default Possible rack and pinion problem?

Well, i have been driving my satty with 2 bad lower ball joints, and what may seem like a loose (but not totally worn) tie rod end on the driver side. I recently replaced one of the lower ball joints (because they are so expensive up here, and strapped for cash, it had to wait a while.) but now i am very worried, whenever i hit a bump, or when i get ice slide (because some and most cars have wider center point, saturns sometimes dont stay in tread) i feel the sterring wheel jerk alot. and baecuase they dont know how to PLOW once and a while here.. it just builds up over time. When i hit the bump and come off it, it almost seems like my entire steering wheel has like a loose bearing, or something out of place. Am i on the right track of a rack and pinion system fault? or could it just be the tie rod end not holding the wheel good enough? Any input on this is appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you should take the car to a professional and have it properly diagnosed. You can do the repairs he finds are necessary. Guessing what's wrong with steering systems may be fooling with your life.

Im not guessing with steering systems, because if it is rack and pinion system, i sell the car. If you dont know my situation with this car, then you wouldnt understand what kind of hell i have been through with it. I knew i should have kept my 1987 Chevy Caprice 350LT1

obviously, you don't like your Saturn, and being short on cash for repairs, well..........

get rid of it, after you fix the steering, or not.

go get another 1987 Chevy Caprice 350LT1, my guess is that you will be mucho happier.........but poorer, not so good gas mileage, just to mention one.............

If you dont sell the car fix the tie rod end soon! I have had one fail on me - a heart stopping experience to suddenly loose all steering and come skidding to a stop because the wheel turned in. Brakes and steering are two things you dont want to put off for any reason.

Actually, I have followed your MPG thread, that's why I'm suggesting you take it to a pro. You would likely be money ahead to find out what the real problem is, instead of spending money on fixing something that isn't the real problem. On the other hand, it sounds in the MPG thread like your engine is not right, and it sounds like half your suspension is not right, so maybe you ought to just move on.

FWIW, I can't believe you'd move back to an LT1. I just got rid of one ('97 Camaro Z28). Price out an optronic distributor or a set of plug wires. $500 list price on the dizzy, $75 for the wires. Six hours to install them. And you'll need them!

Considering ive already installed the parts (tie rod end and rear brake shoes) its kinda late to say sell it. and i need the car... cause i work delivery. I am now up to 31 MPG and rockin on. since i replaced the TB, everything seems to work 100% better. all i need it one more lower ball joint, and im good to go.

As for your comment bedegle2
"obviously, you don't like your Saturn"
Your so off there its not funny. I love my saturn... you maybe cant tell, but its just frusterating dealing with all the in between crap on the car that wasnt done in the first place. I mean, who doesnt do an oil change on a car for almost 6 years (100k) and doesnt do any maintenaance work on it... that i found out after i bought the car too... either way.. she's healthier then ever now.

hmm, could have fooled me, sorry, i just drew a conclusion based on the above comment.............

you can get a complete lower control arm for $42, and it comes with all the bushings and the ball joint, ready to install, and pretty easy to replace. there would be some shipping added to the $42, not much.

how much does a single ball joint cost????

100k without an oil change, wow.

Then fix it.
Ebay is a good source for control arm and tie-rod.

That's where I got mine.

Maybe if you use the correct term you'll find things.

Tie Rods are also for sale for cheap.

After shipping quotes and price conversion, and duty's at the border, i would end up paying well more then i paid. Im happy. But i asked the seller before why he discontinued the saturn LBJ's, he said at the time there wasnt much demand for them. He has put them back up recently (within past couple weeks i suppose)

Where are you located?

You do realize arm_can is shipping from Canada, right?
