Default 2.4 and other questions

Hi. Been on the S forum for sometime (01 SL2) but recently located an Ion that drew my attention. I'd like your collective thoughts. It's an 06 Ion 3 sedan w/17,500 miles, 2.4 engine and lots of other goodies (roof, ABS, traction, factory alloys, etc.) Clean CARFAX, individual owner. It's priced at $11K. That seems high but what are your thoughts? What about the 2.4? Is that a substantial upgrade from the 2.2?
Thanks

When one buys the Enhanced performace package on the ION-3 (only) it comes with.

2.4L VVT
175hp
164 ft lbs ot torque
ABS
Traction Control
FE2 sport suspention

Thats over and above any standard equipment or other options. I have two 2007 ION-3's with that package. My youngest Daughter has a 2007 2.2 ION and it's nothing like the cars that came with the 2.4L package. In March my Sons 2006 ION-3 with that package was totalled no fault of his. The insurance paid $12,922 (without a roof or leather) for the car and that was without buying gap insurance. To me the car if everything is right is worth every penny. Despite the odd dash and typical gaps in panels that comes with a plastic car, I think it's the best small car Saturn "ever" sold.

thutton,

You didn't specify if the Ion you're browsing has a manual or a slushbox (automatic). The manual will only heighten the fun quotient if you found one (unless you don't like driving a stick shift).

While I understand your initial hesitation at paying $11K on a used car, the Ion 3 came with a lot of standard equipment and this one has the sunroof too. It was probably ~$17-18,000 when new so 11K is not that bad for a 3.5 year old car.

As to whether the 2.4's worth it - it is indeed. My first Ion (and fourth Saturn) was an '04 sedan with the 2.2L and a stick. The extra 30hp and 17 lbs-ft of torque do add up over the base engine. I enjoy being pushed back into my seat (relatively speaking) and listening to the growl of the exhaust. To sum it up, the Ion with this engine is a quick little car. It's not fast; it's quick. To find a car under $20,000 that pumped out 170 hp (175hp for 2007s) without a turbocharger and that generated torque to move you from a stop without revving the engine to 5000+ rpms was a rare thing in 2006. The 3's suspension is a markedly firmer than the S car's too, although you lose the independent rear suspension (it's semi-independent on the Ion) and the rear disc brakes become drum units.

The only downside to the 2.4 is that it sucks down more fuel than the 2.2. If you do a lot of highway driving, you may not notice much of a loss. If you spend more time in the city, anticipate a 2-5 mpg drop, more if you compare this Ion's figures to your S car's, however the Ion tips the scales with 400 lbs. more than the S did. I get about 28 mpg in mostly city driving with my '06 Ion. The '04 I had averaged about 32 mpg in the same driving cycle.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

not to mention the fact they have tuning and nice mods readily available, unlike the 2.2 which has nothing.

I have an 06 with everything except leather. I have had it since 06 and no problems. I love my car, and compared to the 2.2 it does have more zip.
Well worth the money in my opinion.

05-07 2.2s do have tuning available, it's the 03-04 2.2s that don't.

something you have to keep in mind when you compare 2.2s and 2.4s is the 03-04, 05-06, and 07 are all different, the 03-04s have the least technology, and in 07 they were brought almost even with the 2.4 in technology

Tethys: your right I keep forgetting the 2006 is 170hp and the 2007 is 175, maybe thats why the best my 2006 did in the 1/4 mile was 15.916 and the 2007 did 15.883 both with the Fujita CAI, and both auto trans cars.

I've owned a 2.2L ION and a 2.4. I much prefer the 2.4 for reasons that have already been noted by others on this thread. At its affordable selling price, the 2.4L ION could have been a MUCH bigger success story for Saturn if only the company had done a better job of telling the buying public that it existed.

yup the IOn is the best car, since it is the most upgradeable car you can go from a 9k car to a 20k+ car, i just wish they had 2.4's on the older ions

Dude! 17K miles! It is not even broken in yet. So I say grab it.

I really like mine. I pd over $16K when new. The only thing to check-out is that it has the "blue fuel injectors" mod. Mine were fussy at about 20K until they replaced them under warranty. SO, if you get a CEL. run some techron fuel injection cleaner for the next two tank fulls. And, if they have the original injectors you may be just fine. I think that there was a bad batch or something.

@ the OP That's a good deal if you ask me. My local retailer has two '06 ION3s w/2.4 - with considerably higher mileage (they both have 30K or more on the clock) - and is asking $13K for each and this is through Saturn, mind you. There's not a lot of 2.4L ION3 models floating around, so if you get the chance to buy one, and everything about the vehicle is legitimate, don't let the opportunity pass you by.
