Default AC suddenly not cooling

Drove 5 mi from home to destination today, AC worked fine as usual. 3 hours later, upon leaving, AC would not blow cold (even tho it sounded like compressor was coming on). Checked it again a cpl hrs later, same story. Other than a sudden & dramatic (& unlikely) freon leak/drain, does anyone have any ideas or experience that might point in a direction? Thx in advance

It's easier to start with the basics. Look in the engine bay for the compressor, startup then turn on ac, look at the compressor again. With engine on or off, the center portion of the compressor doesn't turn. When ac is turned on, the center portion (clutch plate) engages to the spinning pulley. If you don't see the compressor running, check for a blown ac fuse. If the fuse is good then the most likely reason for ac not functioning is the leak no one wants to acknowledge. Other than crash damage to the front end, no one hears ac systems rupture or leak. Leaks are usually slow enough not to hiss loudly. When ac dies, there are no hints and ignoring the number one problem (leak) will distract anyone into quick fixes like refilling that doesn't work. To address a leak or leaks is as inexpensive as buying and using a uv light and searching for dye/oil marks. Find the source of the leak then decide how to repair damage.

Wow, how wrong can a diagnoses get? Weak battery? The lights and other electrical loads should have given hints before the ac did. But what do I know? Better to have a bad battery than ac problems any day.
