Dizzy elec. short

My 93 SC1 has started to short out when any electrical device is turned on. It started with the radio cutting out then coming back on when I stepped on the brakes or turned on the hi beams. Now it's shutting down the engine and it won't even crank for about 45 seconds if any electrical impulse is applied. Then it starts up and runs fine. It will act like this about every other day. Any Idea's? Thanks for the help.

What kind of radio do you have in there and what do you have plugged into the cigarette lighter socket?

No it's a sony wired into the factory harness. It has worked fine for the last 3 years. The problem is that the engine now dies once in a while when I step on the brake, turn on the wipers, turn signal, heater fan,.. Anything that causes an electrical circut to be used.

Most likely the alternator is bad and only partially charging (bad diodes).

+1^^^Test alternator and battery. A bad diode may not show up on an alternator out put test but the battery should show as being low on charge. To check for bad diodes you have to bench test it.

The alt. was replaced about 8 mos ago. I guess I should have it tested anyway.

Yes, a bad diode will cause the problem you are having and rebuilt alternators are well known for high infant mortality. This all gets down to a process of elimination working from cheap/easy to high cost/labor intensive.
