weirdness

The other night I came back from hunting and my SO informed me that our 97 SL2 was doing something weird.

With the ignition off the display on the stereo was still on. I pulled the radio fuse (pass inside) and the lights on the stereo stayed on. I disconnected the battey and the lights turn off. Reconnect the battery - and they stay off. it has not repeated.

Today she drove the 97 SC2 - and when she got to work -the stereo lights stayed on. (different car if you missed it).


what the hell?

Bear with me, I am talking about "weird" stuff to try un-stumping you.

Are the stereos both the same? OEM or aftermarket?

Does she have a big wad of keys hanging on both switches?

Have you watched to see how she turns the key to the off position?

Hey, at least I didn't post pictures of an SL and SC and ask if you could identify which is which!

both are aftermarket - and both had been functioning correctly for over a year. (several years for the SL2)

No wads of keys. broke her of that habit. 1 key on a small fob.

I got the same results myself messing with the key of the SL. Dunno about the SC2 - she still at work....

Is it only the stereo displays that gets power, or can you play music from them?

Any other accessories work, like power windows?

When you unlock a dirty car, the key picks-up grit and road salt. Then, you immediately put it into the ignition. I think this is one reason why cars used to have a separate door key.

When this occurs again, try turning on the radios (with ignition off). Try wipers, turn signals. All three should not have power with ignition off.

If this continues, I'm not sure if vehicle exorcism exists.

I took the "caveman" approach - and ripped the stereo out of the dash. Tonight when the SO gets home - I will stick a stock radio in. I plugged one in - and it worked.


Later I may sacrifice a goat or something...

On my '97 i decided to renew the IgSw (electrical, not cylinder) because
the starter solenoid never engaged with enough zip. (It helped ... the degradation ceased).

During the last couple months of service from the old IgSw, some aspects of the electric system varied. My favorite, was that sometimes i could operate the radio when the IgSw was not positioned 'Ignition-ON'.
After renewing the IgSw, the radio only functioned when the key was in Ig-ON.

Soooo I think that as switch wears, the contacts move a little, and strange things occur....

I did a bunch of concerts at Wings back in the late 70s... We sold tickets at the music store I worked at (Grinnels) and we got comp tickets, stage and backstage passes.....

Saw Ozzy with Black Sabbath at Devos Hall... Great concert.....
