Default 2007 Saturn Ion Possible motor swap

I have a 2007 Saturn Ion and the 2.2liter motor is shot. I am looking for a motor and having trouble finding the right fit. I have located a 2009 Chevy Cobalt motor. Anyone know if this motor will fit? I do believe it is a 2.2liter as well. Any help is always most appreciated!!

Iím not 100% sure whether it will or not. I think GM revised the engine again in either 2009 or 2010 to include VVT, that engine is RPO code LAP... now, one could speculate that running it without connecting anything to the cam phasers would solve the issue, but Iím not totally sure... then again if the engine is listed as RPO L61 then itíll work just fine...

EDIT: after some further research it appears that a 2009 engine is the LAP, and you need an L61, which was offered in the exact configuration you need only in 2007 and 2008... now, one could speculate that you could sit an 07 head on that 09 block and have a compatible engine but itís a lot of work for a ďmaybeĒ

I was wondering if I just use the head and mate it to the '09 block. Not sure. I asked the guy selling the motor to give me some good pictures of it. Problem is I am not seeing the entire thing. I did take the head off of the '07 engine and had everything gone through. Maybe I could buy the motor and put the '07 head on it. Replace the water pump and timing chains.

I hope this works out!

A 2.4 liter has variable Cam timing and higher compression ratio then the 2.2 liter. Also the 2.4 liter had a longer stroke And In larger boar Requiring more fuel. A 2.2 liter head on a 2.4 liter 4 probably run lean, running engine with excessive pinging without being able to retard Cam timing.
