Question Changing headlight bulbs on the 2003 L-Series

How do we go about changing the headlight bulbs in the 2003 L-Series? I can see the low beam bulbs but the high beam bulbs are not visible.

The owners manual says to remove the front grill, to remove the screws at the top of the headlight assembly, to move the white lever near the front grill area up, and then to pull the headlight assembly out.

Okay, I did that. I removed the front grill, removed TWO screws, moved the white lever up, but the headlight assembly feels like it is still secured. I can pull but there is resistance and I don't want to brake anything. Are there more than TWO screws? Do we need to twist or rotate while pulling the headlight assembly away from the car? Has anybody done this successfully and have tips to pass on? Thanks.

Good Lord! I thought Saturns were supposed to be easy to maintain.

My 2000 LS manual showed replacement from the back w/o removing parts.

What did they "improve" to make bulb changes this difficult?

Its actually easier since it gives you more room. The assembly should lift slightly upward to disengage from the mounts.

I found out that on the 00'-02' L's you HAVE to take the headlight assembly off to get to the hi beam head light it is especially tight on the driver side where the battery is located.

I never removed anything and managed to change my low and high beam bulbs to hyper whites...
it helps to have slender hands helping out...
but i never unscrewed anything and managed...that battery area is quite difficult...However, try changing the bulbs on a new Altima...OMG, I had to have the maintenance guys do it, too difficult...lol

Ehh.. a little elbow grease and it's doable without removing the headlight assembly.. I replaced all four bulbs on my 00' with Sylvania Silverstars.. (Great by the way!) ALL it took was a liitle persistence, not worrying about a scratched knuckle or two, and they evetually found their way in.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot.

The high beam bulbs are not accessible on the 2003 L-Series unless the headlight assembly is removed. This may not be the case for the 2000, 2001, and 2002 L-Series, but I have a 2003 L-Series and the headlight assembly is different.

Do you still have to pry out a small black box between the battery and front frame, before you can access the driver side bulbs?

That small black box is the fan control module (I think). On the '00 through '02's, it IS possible to change the bulbs when this is pried up and pulled out some.

Well, I still can't figure out how to access the high beam bulbs in the 2003 L-Series!

I telephoned Saturn at 1-800-553-6000 and they simply read the owner's manual to me. I called my local Saturn retailer and they didn't know either. Tomorrow I'll stop by my local Saturn retailer with my car. Hopefully they will have the FSM pages for me to read....

Mad

Well, the local Saturn place didn't know how to get to the high beam bulbs in the 2003 L-Series either!

Meanwhile I tried to put in SilverStars for the low beams as I've given up on the high beams but the low beams are bulb size H11. Size H11? Yes, H11. So no Silverstars for me...

I have an 03 L200 as well and it was a real pain to get the lights off..you just need to pull a little hard. Remove the grill, remove the screws, lift the lever that is behind the grill, then pull really hard! Put the most pressure on the bottome corner where it seems to be secured. You'll see there is a metal pin that goes to the back. That is where it sticks. If you lift up a little from the front, on that spot, while pulling it will slide right off. It feels like it will break, but it doesn't. I was so pissed off when I tried to put my xenon bulbs in.

Then to top it off I had a pair of 9005 for the Low Beams and 9004 for the high beams as sylvania.com and every other manufacturer said the 03 L took. Once I opened it up I also found that it was H11. I bought some on Ebay manufactured by a company called XD5. They work GREAT! Very bright with a nice hint of blue but not too much.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! 4 months later and now I know how to get to the high beam bulbs! It looks like I was not pulling hard enough (and lifting a little too).

It's unbelievable how hard it is to change the 03 bulbs. I know exactly how you felt. I didn't want to break anything so I was a little nervous myself. I searched all over the internet and couldn't find anything saying it was special, so I finally just decided if it breaks it breaks cause I'm doing what the manual says. Took me an hour to do the first bulb then less then 2 minutes on the second one Just need to get the hang of it. Maybe this will be on the TSB list one day.
