Default Strange Squeak from Clutch

-The strange sound from my car is getting worse. It's a 1999 SL1 Manual. The clutch was installed last fall. As things warm up in Minnesota, the noise becomes louder and louder. At idle, with the engine warmed up, it sounds like a belt is about to shred! Pulling into a parking space gets lots of looks!
-The sound is coming from inside the bell housing. It's not the serpentine belt or the exhaust. It's a rhythmic chirping as the engine runs. It's always there, with the clutch in or out. It seems to go away over about 2000 RPMS. What is in there that could cause this?
-The extra weird part is that the sound persists for a moment once the car is turned off! The engine is shut down, but a few "chirp chirp chirps" continue. I thought it was the exhaust wobbling, but it's definitely coming from between the engine and transmission.

Sounds like the throwout bearing is shot: time to take a look inside before the sound becomes a major repair.

The throw-out bearing was what I was thinking as well. I figured the sounds would change as the clutch was depressed, though. And why would there be a few residual squeaks as the engine is turned off???

Guessing that the bearing is not quite right in the fork tines and maybe is somehow 'kissing' against the flywheel.

As to why the noise continues after the engine has "shut off"... have you observed the actual crank rotation to determine when "shut off" is accomplished?

-This is all good information; thank you! The throw-out bearing should just be touching the metal fingers on the pressure plate, right? The whole assembly rotates with the engine. We were able to use a hoist, and I got yet another set of ears to confirm the sound is coming right out of the bell-housing, right where the steel plate at "6 o'clock" covers the bottom of the fly wheel.
-I will use a mirror, or maybe a friend, and actually watch and see if the engine really STOPS it's movement when the ignition is turned off, or if there is some continual rotation. I'll get on this for Friday!

-We're quite sure the bizarre squeak is not coming from the engine. When the ignition is keyed off, the engine STOPS! The belt and all the pulleys cease rotating almost immediately, while the chirp may persist for just a few moments after.
-It's not the transmission, either. With the clutch pedal depressed for quite some time, there should be nothing left rotating in the actual transmission. It would be the crankshaft, clutch and pressure plate, the throw-out bearing end, and that's it, right? When the car is turned off in this scenario, a few residual chirps are still heard!

When i jogged by a sump/lake/swamp just after sunset last Saturday, the 'peepers' were making that noise...

The air-cooled VWs would sometimes develop a penetrating whistle-screech.
The maintenance manual cure was to drill a 10mm hole in bell housing at specified location, then spray moly lube on the throwout bearing.

This is from way out in left field, but I have encountered crankcase ventilation system issues that would cause a rear main seal to squeal like a reed. This would explain the momentary noise after the engine stops rotating, as the crankcase pressure equalizes with ambient. Replace the PCV valve just for grins and see if it makes a difference.

Well, "left field" or not... that's the only posted so far that makes sense now.

-Wow! Crank-case pressure could be pushing past a seal, and playing it like a flute or a trumpet!?! I've never heard of such a thing, but that is certainly worth looking into. I'll try just running the engine with various things removed, like the oil cap and/or the PCV valve. If the sound changes...
