Default PCM Change... reprogram needed ?

I am trying to figure out if I change out the PCM ,ECU,ECM (whatever it's called) with the same part number, does it need to be reprogrammed ? I have found online some say yes, others say no ... so just trying to figure it out.

I changed out my PCM with another (different part number) and tried to do the relearn and it didn't seem to work so I am thinking about buying a used one with the same P/N and see if that works..

also do I have to change out the BCM as well or can I get by with just changing the PCM ?

thanks in advance

How about some more details on your ION. In general, certainly get one with the same part number PCM. The VIN needs to be programmed in. I've seen ebay sellers and others on the net that program the VIN and flash the latest software before shipping so that may be a good option. Some program the unit to use your original keys, otherwise a key relearn procedure or locksmith may be required. The BCM doesn't need to be changed with it unless it has a problem too.

Thanks, I have a 2004 Ion 4 dr Coupe 2.2, The ECM is having issues and wont let the car run it'll crank over once but then it wont don anythign... I have pretty much narrowed it down to the ECM.... I know the USED ECM will have a different VIN , but should the ECM work without reprogramming it?
Reason I asked I have found a used ECM @ a local junkyard (same part number) for like $25... So I wanted to try that ..... but if I have to reprogram it , it's not worth it...

so just trying to see if I would have to it reprogrammed before it would work?

thanks!

The correct VIN needs to be programmed or the ECM will not operate.
Can you read codes. With the replacement ECM installed you would likely get a P0630 code.

What codes did you get that lead you to believe that the ECM was defective?
