So I'm having the usual knocking from the ISS, but I can only find the part #25979679 which (although some websites say will fit my 2009 XE) is listed as fitting V6 models with the hydraulic steering. Mine is a 4cyl which I believe means electronic steering. Not sure if that distinction matters here. Please advise.

If the U-joints are still good. Try this, Get some spray motor cycle chain lube. I think the stuff I used was Castrol and it had graphite in it but I don't think it matters. Extend the steering column fully. Spray the extended steering shaft then push the wheel in and out. Spray some more until it's good and wet and drawn into the shaft. I used to disconnect the upper joint and work grease into it but that would last about 6 months. I only sprayed the shaft with motorcycle chain lube once.
As far as the part goes, the Hydraulic steering version has a male and female end while the electric steering version has two female ends. Here are a couple of buying options: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...ng+shaft,11373 or https://www.gmpartsgiant.com/parts/g...)&Location=pd:,
