Yes, very sad. I was part of the Saturn product development team long before Spring Hill was built and watched with dismay as GM politics destroyed what should have been GM's salvation.

Penske's deal with an unidentified manufacturer for product post GM fell through. If he was just going to import cars then I guess it just doesn't matter as the real Saturn was far more then just a brand.

Saturn really died in 2004 when the last of Saturn's engineers were transfered back to GM and the Saturn product development center was closed. When that happened Saturn was done and Spring Hill was doomed.

Spring Hill at one time employed 6,000 people and made a profit building just small cars. Buy the time GM was finished making it common with the rest of GM (outsourcing components that used to be made in-house), they were employing around 2,300 and losing money.

Yes Saturn was profitable. So much so that Saturn team members received thousands of dollars in profit sharing. That was all before GM decided that Saturn should just be a brand and share other GM designs.

Glad
not to see Saturn survive, only to become a shell of its former self. Without a plan beyond 2012 Penske was perfectly right to back away. Hopefully GM will treat us with the same respect as core brands like Oldsmobile that have been put out to pasture.

Happy that I left those GM badges on my Vue. No need to leave any denibility as the clock ticks way on my warranty...

And goodbye to you GM. Government Motors can cut the car prices in half, give me free gas, do my laundry and cut my grass and I still would never buy one of their cars again. I have officially moved on. Foreign cars, here I come (again).

Let the exciting times begin!

I think the old GM is going to eat the expense of closing Saturn down, though.

^^^Yeah, that was a bit harsh, unless you were quoting song lyrics.

This news should not have come as a surprise to me. I've moved on from Saturn with Nissan ownership, but it still hurts to see the brand relegated to the scrap heap along with Oldsmobile and Pontiac.

How many out there with '91 S-series that are going to outlast the whole brand?

"A different kind of car company, a different kind of car" -- that Saturn died a long time ago. Nice going GM. I hope you are enjoying my involuntarily provided tax dollars. Not getting any of my voluntary dollars (even with a Saturn logo slapped on a Chevy).
