Default Merry Christmas to us all!

Merry Christmas to all of the SaturnFans out there! I've been very fortunate to have found this website and to have the opportunity to contribute something useful to it. Since the holiday is supposed to commemorate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, I have a challenge for the more Biblically literate among the membership. Even members who consider themselves not, or less than, Biblically literate are welcome to join in on this!

Preface: the other holiday which is celebrated near this one is the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. Jesus was a Jew and this holiday was nearly two hundred years old when he began his ministry in Judea and Galilee. Naturally, he knew of it and, interestingly, it is made mention of in the New Testament. The challenge - should you decide to accept it - is to answer the following question: in which book of the New Testament is this festival mentioned? (Clue: it's not called "Hanukkah" in that text.) Test your investigative skills!! Flex the mental muscles!!!

BTW, there is no reference to this festival in the Hebrew canon of scripture, or the Old Testament. It is found in the books of the Maccabees. Why were those books not included? In reading them one finds the "weight" of the text to be wanting and also because it was originally written in Greek and not in Hebrew. Nevertheless, it's an important part of ancient Jewish history.

The Feast of Dedication, today Hanukkah, once also called "Feast of the Maccabees," was a Jewish festival observed for eight days from the 25th of Kislev (usually in December.)

Thank you for the reply, SRGW! You correctly identified the way the festival is named in the New Testament. (BTW, I think "was" in the above quote should actually read with the word "is.") Can you also name the NT book in which it is found? Anyone owning a good Concordance book could easily find it. For extra credit , what is Jesus doing and where is he in the context of the passage where the reference to this festival is written?

It should be noted -- Saturnalia predated Christmas by more than 4 centuries.
