It's time to replace the brake pads on my 99 SL1.
Which pads? Autozone has nice prices but I don't know anything about the quality (Duralast). (They have some ceramic Duralast for $38.00 a pair.) A Google search turned up some pretty negative comments on Duralast, but what I've seen on this forum seem positive. Also, whether to go ceramic, metalic, or whatever? What are the OEM pads? I want to do the job myself, I've replaced pads on other cars, but never had to turn or replace the rotors. Since this is the first time on this car I'm not sure what condition the rotors are in. Since Autozone rotors are so cheap it would be tempting just to replace them. Again, what is the Autozone quality? Or, is it safe to visually check the rotors and just replace the pads if they seem OK. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Tom

i usually pick middle priced pads. replace roters if pedal pulses or are badly rusted at contact surfaces. tighten wheels evenly.

Generally, the thought on disc pads and rotors are to buy good pads and get the "white" box rotors that are cheap.
I had my rotors turned and that cost about $8 cheaper than getting new "white box" ones. I bought the $30 set of pads from Advance. Silver something? Some people will buy the ceramic pads. They are very hard and will last. I strongly advise that whatever you do with the pads that you buy, do something with the rotors. Turn them or buy new... The cleaning process of the caliper pins and the clips the pads slide on is important. http://autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker...3d8019acf0.jsp For your reading pleasure. |

I put the Duralast Brake Pads on my car not too long ago. They have been doing great for me.
