Default No Hatchbacks!

Astra doesn't look bad from the front but I will declare myself as an American buyer. I AM NOT BUYING A HATCHBACK!!! I hate em, they are ugly and I want a real trunk!

We are running at a deficit on nice coups in America. I had hoped Saturn would not do this.

hatchbacks are growing in popularity, especially since gas prices are only going to go up. they offer functionality, sportiness, and usually a lower purchasing price.

people want em', maufacturers will build em'. bottom line.

I agree with you. That's why I bought my Ion QC, nice looking car and a coupe. With the recent not so great looking designs coming from Saturn, I can honestly say I will never purchase another new Saturn again.

So don't buy an Astra. You can buy a 2008 Ford Focus coupe. They're dropping the the ZX3 and ZX5 hatchback.

IMO Ford has dropped the Focus hatchbacks because the rear seats are unsafe. Not enough crumple space for accidents. Their styling also had a lot to be desired...

I couldn't agree less. Have you ever owned a hatchback? It's so much more usefull than a trunk. I have always thought that my SC2 would be perfect if it had a hatch.

True indeed. I've had quite a few hatchbacks and they are very versatile. The GOLFs I had were very roomy and held a ton of stuff. The Civic and Accord I had were also pretty handy. The Mazda 3 and 6 come in hatches and they look wonderful.

What GM's stylists may do with the hatch is another story though. That pregnant tadpole thing they have going on is not a nice hatch IMHO.

I wonder if folks only think of hatchbacks that look like an SUV from the back. I prefer the style of hatch on the Probe, RSX, Celica instead of the style on the Focus, Fit, Yaris.

I agree. My wife has an RSX (which she bought before she met me, the loyal GM employee) and it's more useful than my SC2. When we need to haul two bikes, or a ton of recycling the RSX is the obvious choice over the SC2 even though the RSX is smaller. The RSX is a perfect example of a hatchback that doesn't look like a wagon. The SC2 could have been a hatchback with the same exact shape.

Nice to hear from yet another wide open mind. So buy an elephant.
Be paitent Opel has a conventional 4 door sedan for certain other non- European markets which i'm sure will be built here when Astra production comes to the USA.

Exactly. I hate hatches in their usual form (Golf, Omni, ZX5, etc.) pretty much for the styling reasons. I had an Omni, and yes it was the second most useful vehicle I've ever had next to my S-10. But it was god-aweful ugly, and no I don't think a newer model of that type looks much better. I prefer the look of a sedan, or a hatch in the styles you are talking about. Don't forget the 3rd gen+ F-body's.

I've owned two hatchbacks before getting my SL2, and the practical aspect of them is far superior to the capabilities of my S-Series, which is no slouch. With utility being the primary function of hatches, there's only so many ways to bend the sheetmetal, and Astra, especially in 3-door hatch guise, is particularly handsome in spite of it.

True, the North American marketplace, primarily the US, has generally been cold to hatches. We want our trunk space. The Mazda3 notchback 4-door sedan outsells its 5-door variant, at least in my area. Even the Malibu Maxx has gone largely ignored in its four-model-year long lifespan. I suspect in both cases, this is largely due to styling and not functionality.

So don't buy one, 'nuff said.

Why people are so hostile towards a body style of car is beyond me. I can see not liking them, but to start a whole thread that will, inevitably, turn into a flame war simply to complain about something that is totally irrelevant and unstoppable is silly. The small, 2 door coupe market is gone. Not shrinking, gone. SUV's sell because of their abilities and that includes versatility, which like it or not, a hatchback has in spades over a traditional coupe. Same with a 5 door vehicle, a sedan just can't haul as much home for the non-SUV buyer should they happen to go to Home Depot. The Camaro was a hatchback from '81 to '03 when they went away; didn't stop the sales of those cars. True, they're going to a coupe body style, but that's more because the car is meant to be a niche vehicle and it's retro-themed. This isn't the era of the Vega or Chevette, hatchbacks are different now. Who thought the 3rd door a Saturn was stupid, until they used it the first time? Same for the QC; many people thought it was silly, until they realized how useful and versatile the car could be with them. Why else would Mazda crib it for the RX8? Looks? Nope. I'm thrilled that the Astra is a hatchback, it'll make it even more useful for taller items that don't go in my Ion's trunk, even with the seats down. It's happening, we can't stop them, so what's the point? Choice is a good thing.

I'd take my Ion over any s-series or astra. The astra is the best small Saturn ever? How can you make that assumption when the Saturn version has YET to be produced? Oh, but the pictures make it look so great right?

I usually think of the SUV style hatchback, which are the ugliest things in the world.
My mom had a 93/94 Dodge Daytona ES (last year they made 'em) that was a PITA to get in and out of but was like dads favorite recliner once you were in. Defiantly no use for the rear seats unless you are the size of a cat.

I'd take one of them over my SC1 or maybe even an SC2 in a heartbeat if for nothing else then the comfort value. Oh, and the option of swapping in a factory turbocharged 2.2L I4 (stock on the IROC R/T's) and no diff pin issues is a major plus.

...
The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

Yeah, I'd agree with that statement. I don't really mind the styling of the traditional hatchback, as they are quite useful, which makes up for it. I would prefer a Probe/RSX/Celica style hatch though, as they look much better. If I wanted a useful "traditional" style hatch, I'd just skip that and buy an SW2, though they're the only newer station wagon I really like enough to own.

I'm not going to pass any judgement about the Astra until I actually get to see one in person. Then and only then will I decide if I really like it or not.
