GM says strong euro bad for Opel sales in US-report

FRANKFURT, Jan 13 (Reuters) - The euro's strength against the dollar will make it harder to sell Europe-made cars like the Opel Astra profitably in the United States, a newspaper quoted the CEO of General Motors Corp. <GM.N> as saying.

U.S. carmaker GM has decided to start marketing the Opel Astra model in the United States under the brand name Saturn towards the end of this year. Germany's Opel is part of the GM group.

"When we made that decision the profitability outlook was better than today," GM CEO Rick Wagoner told Germany's Welt am Sonntag newspaper, according to a preview obtained on Saturday of an article due for publication on Sunday.

"Now it's going to be more difficult because the euro is simply so strong," Wagoner was quoted as saying.

The euro <EUR=> has appreciated to around $1.30 from $1.20 in the past 12 months

GM should have seen the economic trends before planning the shutdown of ION production at Spring Hill. Why do you think Totota, Hyundai, and Nissan build their cars in the US?

What's the alternative? No Astra, or "Hecho en Mexico". Hell we can build it next to the new VUE...

The other side of the coin is that North American produced cars like the rebadged Saturn Sky will be cheaper in Europe.

The Astra will only temporarily be imported into the U.S. (for a year or two) as a stop-gap until another North American GM plant can be retooled to build the car.

Wow, I think the most intelligent solution is to build this Saturn Astra in the US but keeping the quality finish of the germans... with this Im sour that the new Astra is going to be a supersales like the Astra is in Europe (the 2 in the ranking of his category behind the over-valued Golf in Europe the Astra with the same equipment and engine like a golf is close to 4.000/6.000 cheaper than the VW...)

If somebody wants photos of my Astra I put here pleased

The imported ASTRA was planned to be an intrim thing from the very beginning. I am sure that as soon as a US plant is ready, import Astra's will go away.

GMis anxious to have their completly new product line in SATURN showrooms asap.

I hope this doesn't get screwed up with GM and or the dealers thinking they can play with pricing on this car. An overpriced Astra could definately hurt sales.

Corolla, Civic, and yes Cobalt has a lock on that segment.
Hopefully the GM and the Saturn dealers can learn from Pontiac's experience with the GTO.

Depending on how one interprets lock on the segment can make a difference. For comparison last months sales of Cobalts were 13,605
and ION sales were 7,162. Chevy sold less than twice as many Delta sedans as Saturn out of ten times as many stores (I think). Good job Saturn.
