Question Headlight Bulb Options?

I'm wondering what types of headlights are the brightest. As far as I know, there are three types. Halogen, Xenon, and HID. It's true that there are HID-LIKE bulbs that are actually halogen, correct?

Which of these are illegal? (If any)

What type looks the most like the lights you see on the new nissan maxima, or BMW's?

I've heard that HID lights require a separate ballast. True/False?

I had OEM bulbs and the Vue's lights were great. I bought some Xenon Krypton bulbs from Ebay and wow much brighter. Some SaturnFan's have said these lights are actually not brighter with use of photo light meters. The bulbs I have seem whiter than OEM bulbs. This is the less expensive solution.

True HID solutions for our Vues have been seen in previous posts here on SaturnFans.

The xenon Krypton bulbs work for me very well.

Dunno what ones are the brightest, but the sylvania silverstars are pretty nice. I replaced my hi and low beams and I love em. Not illegal either.

I've had Silverstars, and while they are nice, they burn out way too fast. Only seen to last 3-4 months for me. Right now, I have Piaa "Super White" bulbs and they are just as good as the Silverstars, but have lived 7 months so-far. Supposedly with the Piaas, their 60W bulb puts out 100W equivalent light.

I have silverstars in our '93 SW2 for over 1 1/2 years and still working as great as they did on day 1. They are an incredible upgrade from the oem bulbs. I have them for both the high and low beem. The vibration has no effect on them as my son autocrosses this car and the parking lots where SCCA sets up the courses are not very smooth. I am planning on purchasing them for both of my Vue's this summer.

Sylvania Silverstars for about two years now, no problems. They are a drastic improvement over the stock bulbs.

I got a set of these (High and low beams):

HIR 9011 & 9012 BULBS

They are brighter than OEMs, and much brighter than Xenon type blue bulbs. However, they produce a yellow light like the stock ones, so if what you want is that HID white look, look elsewhere.

Combined with the 885 (50W) fog light bulbs... My Vue produces quite a bit of light up front!!

I highly recommend the PIAA bulbs. They are quality products. I have not put any in my Vue but I have used them on all my other cars and have not had problems with them burning out or anything which I have had problems with on other aftermarket bulbs.

Short of true HID kits which are illegal now anyhow the PIAAs are very nice.

You can't always judge the effects of changing lights by a light meter.
The light meter will give you an empirical figure; however, your eyes aren't equally sensitive to all frequencies of light.
You're least sensitive to red, and I don't know which (yellow or blue) you're most sensitive to.
So, if you change to a different color, it might seem brighter or less bright depending on the color of the light involved, even though a light meter might report that all of the lights are the same brightness.
My recommendation, buy whatever you want, as long as what you get is DOT legal.
