Default Another S-Series or Ion?

Hello all,

I am looking for some advise and opinions. I have owned a '95 SL2 for many years and it finally died a hard death. I am in the market for a new vehicle and really like the Saturn.

My question is about which model to pursue. I love the S-series vehicles as they are easy to work on and I have been able to do all the work myself including a clutch change with the help of the good folks here. I am wondering what the opinions of folks are in regards to S-series versus Ion? Is the Ion as friendly and easy to work on as an S-series?

And advise is welcomed.

Thanks in advance!

The ION is generally considered to be a reliable model, especially the Ecotec engine that powers it. Some of the early automatics can be finicky (mostly in the Quad Coupe) but if you are looking at another manual trans to follow your S-Series, you shouldn't have any unusual problems. There are parts that were cheap in design (such as some suspension parts), but generally not difficult or expensive to repair. Cost-to-own should likely be as low as the S.

This recent thread in the ION forums may help summarize some of the differences between them. No harm in driving examples of both the ION and S-Series as you look.

Don't mean to hijack the first post, but I have the same question.

I have a 96 SL1 that's rusting out at the undercarriage (I live in Upstate NY, so 'nuff said) that I don't want to, but may have to part with.

I found a 2001 SL1, 128K miles for $2995 that I'm thinking about (depending on the CarFax), and a 2007 Ion 2 with 68K miles for $3,625.

Pretty strapped for cash so that's about my affordability limit and the insurance company is going to give me $1100 to total my SL1 based on the rust condition (I haven't gotten a repair estimate yet, but I presume it's pretty hefty and more than the $1100).

Replace the Saturn or repair the SL1? If replacing, do you recommend the Ion or the SL1?

07 Ion with 68K for $3625?? You'd be foolish not to take that. That S-series is really high priced!!!! That's an 11 yr old car!!!

yes S-Series hold their value well. which was great when I traded my 2002 SC2 with 132,000 mies in for my 2011 Fiesta.
