Default Headlight switch smoking

Hi all

My daughter has a 2000 stationwagon. She just called me because her turnsignal switch was smoking while she was driving. I went to where she was and it was still smoking 30 minutes later and the headlights were stuck on. I disconnected the battery and removed the 2 headlight fuses and was able to get it home. Any ideas on what it could be. Where can i get a good wiring diagram for this car? I used to be a toyota mechanic so replacing the switch or other parts isnt a problem. Does anybody know a reliable Saturn mechanic in the San Diego area?

Thanks
Dave

I can't help with anything electrical. But the Chilton's manual does have many pages of schematics. (I can post a pic later today if you want but I am not sure what pages you'd need)

Try a forum search for smoking + steering wheel and you may find some useful info

There are threads (and probably a richpin video) on removing the steering wheel. Remove it, and the clockspring, and remove the multifunction switch. Inspect the wiring and connectors. If there damaged, you have some wiring repair to do. Then reinstall the fuses. If that stops the smoking, and the wiring/connectors aren't damaged, then replace the multifunction switch. You'll need a wagon-specific one, unfortunately.

The driver should have known where to look for the fuses to disarm the situation. Or at least how to disconnect the battery. She could have prevented damage to the wiring, making this a simple switch R&I job, rather than possibly a significant wiring harness repair/replace effort. OTOH, she might have, by doing nothing, allowed the car to burn to the ground, at significant cost to the public. 30 minutes is an eternity when something's burning. People should know how to handle such situations _before_ getting behind the wheel.
