Default A/C recharge...

I have never done it before. It's the R12 system. I know you need a gauge and another tool. I cannot remember what exactlty was needed. If someone could point me in the right direction and tell me whether or not harbor frieght carries the necessary equipment... well that would be swell.

Is it worth it to buy the stuff and do it myself or just get my buddy at saturn to do it for me. I don't have any other cars that run R12 so I feel as though it would not be cost effective for me to buy it.

Ask your buddy for help, if he knows airconditioning. Airconditioning is airconditioning, whether its the freezer, room unit, fridge or our cars. They all work the same way but simply refilling one can open a Pandora's box of more headaches than you can imagine. Just scan the threads about 'em. Have you read of any successful recharges that don't need weekly, monthly, annual refills? They're supposed to be sealed for the life of the car but in reality we jump curbs, slide into snow banks, crash, etc., that will do untold damage to a/c systems with soft aluminum tubing. At best, a recharge will work perfectly for one time. At worst you're looking at converting or at least repairing what's leaking.

All you need are the shop's R12 gauges, a can tap for R12 and some time. R12 doesn't use quick connects like R134A systems so the old stuff is needed - all screw on fittings. Have your friend look over the system for possible leak points before wasting expensive R12. Even using a can tap and single hose will do if the person knows what they're doing.

Since I have had the vehicle it has never needed the a/c to be charged. I cannot imagine that there is a leak. Atleast I hope not. I have a/c dye at work so I can run it through.

My friend is a Saturn master tech so I'm sure he knows the a/c system. I only use him in situations like this. Where it's a tool I will never need again and I don't want to spend my money to buy it.
