Default 2005 Saturn ION dies while driving and after its little colder it starts again

2005 Saturn ION - manual - 170k miles.

This car dies while driving .....but when you let it cool down a little ..it will start again.

What could be the reason ?
Why would it die while driving...and there is no specific time after which it dies.

But after a while it dies ..it always starts up

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Flakey crank sensor maybe? You need to determine what you are lacking after it stalls. Check for spark. Could possibly be a fuel pump going bad as well. See if you have fuel pressure or listen for the fuel pump when you cycle the key.

Car dies while driving when it hot/warm ..has nothing to do with timing correct?
could it be coolant temperature sensor because it is related to temperature?

Does not have anything to do with the timing of the motor. I highly doubt that the coolant sensor would be the issue.

Just to give little more info...
There is no consistency as to how long it will drive before it dies. Sometimes it last for 40 miles and sometimes just 10-15 miles before it dies.
Does it give you better idea as to what could be wrong?

Is the check engine light on as it should be with the key on engine off? Does the engine crank after stall and while does not start?
Possible bad powertrain relay number 29 or other high resistance connection.

Lets assume ..crank sensor is bad...if so is it tough to replace it?

2000 L-Series 2.2L Sedan
Default Re: 2005 Saturn ION dies while driving and after its little colder it starts again

Although the engine is not identified by the OP it's most likely a 2.2L ECOTEC. The symptoms previously described are similar to those mentioned in the L-Series forum when a crankshaft position (CKP) sensor is displaying intermittent failures. With that in mind, the CKP sensor should be on the block behind the starter motor and also near the oil pressure switch.

The starter must be removed to have access to the CKP sensor. Removing the starter's upper mounting bolt is somewhat awkward. It's more difficult to reinstall it. If you intend to replace that sensor then be patient with reinstalling the upper mounting bolt. It may take a number of attempts to get the bolt threads started correctly.

2007 ION-2 Quad Coupe
Default Re: 2005 Saturn ION dies while driving and after its little colder it starts again

I feel that the coil pack is more likely to be bad than the crankshaft position sensor, but the symptoms could stem from either one. Also, check the wiring harness near the oil filter housing for fraying.

Is the Check Engine light on? If so, get the code numbers and post them here. That would be most helpful.
