Default Why didn't the recall fix key chime prob?

My daughter's 2007 Ion 2 has had the key reminder chime for a couple of years. I replaced the ignition switch back in 2011 as a precautionary measure. It wasn't until late 2014 that the chime prob started. I changed out the door switch, even though I doubted that was the fix, with no changes. I regretted having to change out the lock cylinder as some on here have done with a high degree of difficulty, because I feel a little nervous about that. I thought the recall was a godsend because they would replace it for free. No such luck. It still chimes after key removal. Any thoughts/diagnosis are appreciated.

It's common for the speaker on the back of the instrument panel to go bad.

Do you have any chimes or blinker noise?

Sorry for late reply. Yes, all chimes and blinker noise still work. I was led to believe the reason the key chime reminder was going off after key removal was the lock cylinder, but apparently it's something else. Any help is appreciated.

This is just a bump. Can someone list all problems associated with the key reminder chime staying on. I have exhausted all remedies/posts on the board. The dealer told me there was a switch on the trunk lid to check. I did not see it nor believe that is the problem. Thanks in advance.

2007 ION-2 Quad Coupe
Default Re: Why didn't the recall fix key chime prob?

I just fixed this exact same issue on our 2007 Chevy Equinox a few months ago by replacing the ignition switch. The ignition switch in the Equinox isn't identical to the switch in the Ion, but it is very similar and operates the same way.

There is a small round button in the base of the ignition switch (see bottom right image in the attached picture below) that closes a circuit when the key is in the ignition. Either that part of the ignition switch is bad or something is holding that button down after you remove the key. There is a small cam in the lock cylinder case (the part around the lock cylinder) that presses the button in the ignition switch when the key is inserted into the lock cylinder.

There is literally nothing else that would cause this issue short of a bad BCM which is not likely. The trunk switch would make "TRUNK" display in the message center if it was bad just like when the trunk is open, so that's definitely not the problem.

The ignition lock housing has a small plastic rod that transfers that key in lock cylinder to the ignition switch. The rod is sometimes sticks.
Key in ignition signal can be seen in BCM data with the scan tool (Tech2)
Replace the Ignition lock housing.

ruley73- Thanks for the insights. I can't view your link, possible website issue.
bern- Thanks for your help. I think you're dead on with your assessment. I thought the recall included all ignition parts, but after checking the GM site it shows everything was changed EXCEPT the housing. The housing is fairly expensive and I'll assume that I'll not have to do the relearn procedure since I'll use the same cylinder and key, right? Anyway, thanks for you (r) inputs and if I attempt the repair, I'll let you know if I'm successful.

The lock housing new from the dealer will come with a new switch. You can transfer your lock cylinder to the new housing. Then the new Ignition switch will need 30 minute learned.
Also don't remove the switch and the lock cylinder from an Ion housing at the same time.
