2004 ION Red Line
Default How do you change the air filter?

I was able to take off the air hose and undo the 3 screws but I can't lift it up. All the wires and hoses are in the way, especially the radiator hose. I'd like to put in a K&N filter but if I can't do it I'll just have to go to the dealership and have a stock filter put in.

If you're wishing to put in a new flat-panel filter, it's simple, as mentioned above. Follow the hose that comes out of the box placed at the center of the engine over to the left hand side of the engine compartment. This large box has three metal clips that hold it down. Push those back so they snap off the top of the box. You do not need to remove the air hose to do this. Pull the lid of the box up, remove the old filter, put in the new filter, and then put the lid back on. The snaps will be something of a pain to get back on, but nothing major.

Since this is in the Red Line section, there is no flat panel fiter or clips on the airbox.

You'll have to move the hose back and wiggle the lid out.

I had no luck wiggling it past everything. Guess I need to try harder then. Thought there might be some trick to it.

I just put a K&N in mine and it was a royal pain in the butt. What I ended up doing was taking out the screws (don't leave them in the top, they'll fall into the engine compartment when you try to extract the top ) and undoing all the clamps that hold the intake hose from the intake to the air cleaner.

I think I removed the excess vacuum line from the intake also, it seems like it's part of the mass airflow sensor. Be careful around that gizmo. Then lift and pull and rotate and wiggle past all the other obstructions. It's not easy but it can be done.

The air filter element did not come out with the cover. It stayed in the enclosure and I had to fish it out. I clamped the K&N to the cover and wedged the whole thing back in slowly, rotating and wiggling (the cover, geez). I'm sure I bent the cage but I didn't see any other way. Between that and the stage 2 - Wahoo! I mean, it works pretty well.

My plan is to check back on it in about 5 years...

Didn't see the Redline part of this... Although I will say, if you're thinking of installing an aftermarket intake, check with www.redlineforums.com first. There's been a couple out there that actually throw codes in the computer and give you less power.

I changed my intake filter by buying a new intake and it came with one.

Sorry, I had to.

Man, I did this this past weekend. Like mytdawg said, it was a pain to take out. I unfastened the engine breather hose from the elbow and then took out the elbow. Then I removed the screws from the cover. Once removed you've got to wiggle out the filter from the tube attached to the cover. Took awhile but it slid away slowly. Then it was a hassle to take out the filter but once done to put back it was simple.
