Checkered Flag Low Fuel Warning

Do anyone know how many gallons of gas are left in the tank when the low fuel warning comes on?

I believe the owner's manual says 1.5 gallons.

IIRC it's phrased "when there is less than 1.5 gallons of fuel." In other words, it won't go off early, but you shouldn't count on having the full 1.5 gal of range remaining.

On another note about this low fuel warning. I hate the fact that if I park the car on a street that is not built flat and have probably around 3 gallons of fuel left which has shifted to one side of the tank, when you turn on your car your fuel gauge will show you have nothing left on your tank and the warning comes on.

Then you park the car on a mostly flat and level street, driveway or garage turn the car on again and magically you've gained back the amount of fuel you lost. We've had 2 other Ions before and even my Redline does it. Does our fuel tank have an overly gravity sensitive float in the tank or what?

This the only very minor gripe I have, apart from that I love this car!

I topped off tonight after my Low Fuel Warning. Traveled 7.3 miles and Filled 11.176 gallons before it clicked off. As I understand it I have a 13 gallon tank. So I've got maybe another 30-50 miles before I'd use all 13 gallons.

With that said... Exactly how much Fuel my Saturn can use of the total 13 gallons is another question.

I'd recommend filling up reasonable soon after a Low Fuel Warning to play it safe.

Ironic... my low fuel chime and indicator come on for the very first time yesterday... the needle was just above the empty line when the little message popped up... I was waiting for the little orange fuel pump icon to light up but the car didn't have one, weird.

I drove about another 15 kms afterward and went to gas up.

All you gotta do is look in your owners manual. Total fuel tank size is 13.5 gallons, the low fuel warning is supposed to go off when 10 gallons have been expended. Leaving 3.5 gallons left.

But I also warn that it isn't always accurate.

My low fuel light has NEVER gone on unless I've used at least 11.5 gallons, and you're NEVER going to get 13.5 gallons used from a 13.5 gallon tank.

My warning light came on yesterday and I drove it for another mile or so and got 11.16 gallons of gas. But, I've gotten 11.75 gallons of gas before without the Low Fuel light being on.

synthkat: my gauges usually read a bit higher when I start the car than when it's on the road for a couple of minutes. It's park on flat surface. however, my gauges will read 1/4 lower if I stall/turn off the car and turn it back on soon afterward only when my tank is less than 1/3 full. It doesn't read 1/4 lower if the tank is more the 1/3 full. it's weird.

search the forum for "gas tank capacity" or "fuel tank capacity" and you'll see a lot of questions as to the real amount of gas in the tank. i've read on a different thread that the fuel pumps are in the actual tank (so the fuel cools the pumps) and they displace some fuel themselves. I think the general feeling is to not trust that your fuel light will come on at a regular time and definitely don't expect your tank to hold as much as your owner's manual says. i'm sure the fictional gas tank my owner's manual describes is one gallon bigger than the one in my car.
