Default Voltmeter Installation

Has anyone attempted to install a voltmeter in their Saturn? I recently learned that my transmission problems were the result of my alternator overcharging. If I had a gauge to monitor, I think I would have seen the voltage spikes.

I recall seeing a post by someone that bought a VDC meter that plugs right into the lighter. It was pretty cheap too.

They must make them bacause I have one that plugs into the lighter with red, yellow, and green idiot lights. Not good enough for exact readings, but good enough to see if you are charging.

If it was me and I wanted to monitor the alternator. Id mount the gauge inside the car, ground it somewhere near the gauge and run the positive to the 12V output of the alternator.

Starter to battery. Thats the one doing thr charging. The purple one only gets voltage when you start the car.

I doubt that installing a voltage probe with a wire attached to the alternator will make any difference compared with the cigarette lighter meter. There is a very small milivolt difference between the alternator and battery. That is - when the battery puts out 12.5 volts on its own and the alternator generates 14V, the battery will read 14V when the car is running.

Radio Shack sells one with a digital readout... it even includes inside/outside temp as well as the voltmeter function :-)

We've been using one of these ever since I got stranded at the local mall due to a bad alternator!
