Default Anyone try one of these out yet?

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.33585

If it does what it says, we may be able to do a lot of things we've been going to the dealership for, such as marrying and divorcing stereos and info panels. What say ye?

I think I may order one of these... $40 isn't bad, and it includes the software too. That is usually the really expensive part.

Iv read that its an "imitation" of VAG-COM. Unlike other readers this program could actually write data into the ECU's. So if you donno what your doing this could be the

Windows 7 x64 should prove interesting with this thing then. I always have a Windows XP based laptop that I can break out.

Or just use the computer I'm building for the Astra and use it real time

May order this weekend, waiting for my paycheck'

Still waiting on it. The status on their website is "waiting on supplier" so this could be a while.

It was shipped out a good 5-ish days ago, but coming from half way around the world with 'free' shipping it going to take a while.
I'm hoping I'll have it within a week.

How is this ANY different than having a VW? Just and CANbus on top of it and that's pretty much what we're dealing with.

So, what did you get to replace the Astra? Chances are it has problems as well.

I didn't replace the astra. I just bought the wife a VUE and started driving the car she took from me because she hated the astra. We all make mistakes and me thinking she would like the astra was one of my mistakes.

PS: VW LOL

Well, it came in the mail today.

I've got a busy schedule for the rest of the day, so hopefully I can at least install the software and see if the device can hook up to my laptop.

Yes and no.
My windows 7 x64 laptop detects it, and I can install drivers for the device. However, the device also needs drivers for a small chip on board that is basically a usb to serial port converter.
I have the drivers, install them and it won't start up.

Basically, it needs 2 sets of drivers and only 1 works.

I'm still going to try it on my windows xp laptop to see if I get the same results. I'm not sure what the issue is, so I'm going to try a few things.
Hopefully I'll have time latere today.

Hmm, it being a serial device might be a bad thing.

What chipset is that onboard adapter?
