2003 ION-2 Sedan

Default Engine swap

I have a 2003 Ion 2.2 l 5 speed. I believe my head gasket is going and need to replace the engine soon. I want to replace it with a supercharged redline engine. Is it a simple swap? Or do you need anything special to complete? Can I use the transmission I have? or do I need a different one to handle the extra power? I will be replacing the clutch at the same time. I don't think the swap itself will be difficult. Just looking for any saturn specific tips. I have done a saturn sl2, audi A4, camaro, and ford escort engine swaps recently. Thanks for any advice!!

Default Re: Engine swap

Did your engine swaps include changing from a stock engine to a turbo or supercharged engine? If not, experiences may not help as you're attempting a major change involving a different engine and using a supercharger. Just guessing here; the mechanics are the same but displacement is different and the supercharger adds complexity by requiring a different ECM and possibly some wiring changes. As you aware, the stock 2.2L engine uses one type of map sensor while the 2.0L supercharged engine uses a different one and most likely aren't interchangeable because of positive boost in the 2.0L engine. The stock 2.2L engine never sees positive boost so the map sensors are different and the ECM is calibrated differently for each engine. At the minimum, the 2.0L engine must use it's ECM, not the 2.2L ECM. If an intercooler is used, that needs to be transferred too, along with any changes to the air intake system. I don't know if a boost gauge is electronic or mechanical and this would require either instrument panel replacement, gauge transfer, transferring plumbing or electrical wiring to the ECM. Whether you have to transfer wiring harnesses or not is another issue.

The transmission may or may not be the same. You'd have to check specs for Ions having the 2.0L supercharged engine and xmission to see if it came as an automatic or manual.
