Just off the top of my head, I think it could fall off if the bearing completly scatters. There is a small snap ring on the end of the CV axle, but I doubt that would hold it on in a complete bearing failure.

I can't say I've ever heard of it happening on a front wheel drive car, but I think it's possible. I was once in a '68 442 when a rear bearing went. The axle went rolling across the road complete with wheel and brake drum.

Fiction. BUT DON'T PUSH YOUR LUCK. The wheel is held into the hub by the axle shaft nut that holds the drive axle in place which inserts THROUGH the bearing. It's not going anywhere, but it could SEIZE, super heat and even catch fire, which would take out your front brakes on that side, lock that wheel up and result in LOSS OF CONTROL. This needs to be fixed NOW. The longer you wait, the greater the risk and the more expensive the repair will be.

...what he said... the wheel isn't going to fall off, but the other REAL possibilities are just as sobering. one shouldn't test them...

All true, but when I read "marbles rolling around", I'm more likely to think CV joint than wheel bearing. Have you thoroughly inspected both?
