If it is, it's news to me. My dealer told me to use 87. Every now and then I run a tank of 89. I actually do get about thirty more miles out of a tank of 89.

What does the owner's manual recommend? I'd go by that.

No problems with 87 here. If there is a mileage or performance difference, I don't notice it on day to day driving.

I had been complaining about the increasingly louder ticking noises from my engine, and I was eventually told by a Spring Hill tech that I should run premium about every other fillup, but now i've forgot why my engine was ticking so. The sound went away, and the engine seems to run better at least. Kat knows the reasons why, i'll see if I can get her to post here.

I know I talked to Charlie one time, and he said he had been informed the same thing, to fill up with premium every other fillup.

Using premium every other tank doesn't make sense..what does that accomplish? If you fill up at 1/2 tank every time maybe..I would think Mid-Grade all the time

If you can hear the knock on a modern engine, then you have other issues. The knock sensors should hear it and retard the timing before we notice.

Here in Colorado we have 85, 87 and 91 octanes. My retailer said to just use 85. They said not to waste money on premium anywhere, even out of state. The engine computer can adjust and prevent any knock and ping.

A knock sensor can detect knock that you can't hear.

Saturn recommends regular old 87 octane for the 3.5. Honda does recommend premium for their applications of that engine. If you put premium in a VUE with the 3.5 you will improve performance. It's an unusual case, but the Honda engine will increase timing advance in response to higher octane. There is definitely a noticable difference.

I ran a tank of premium in my SC2 and noticed an improvement in performance and reduced knocking for that tank and the next several months of running regular.

It probably isn't a bad idea to run a tank of premium every few months or so, but not every other tank.

Default Re: Saturn recommends premium-grade gasoline for V6

My VUE has never tasted anything higher than 87 and it runs just fine. I never heard a ping or knock or anything. The only way I would put anything higher in is if they either (A) recommended it or required it or (B) by putting the higher octane in it would SIGNIFICANTLY improve gas mileage where the extra mileage would even out the cost or (C) there are no gas stations within 10 miles that have regular unleaded available, therefore I am forced to put a higher octane in so I can get where I have to go. With the hurricanes we've seen here in the past couple years, that happens often during the season where 87 is run dry. My dealer told me upon purchase that it uses regular unleaded and there is no need for premium.
