Default Saturn ion manual - awkward 3rd and 4th shifts

2006 2.2 manual

Not really sure where to start with this one.

1. 3rd and 4th gear are noticeably 'notchy'. No grinding just not as smooth as it used to be with a very noticeable 'click' engagement. 1st, 2nd, and 5th are fine.

2. If I take the shifter out of 1st, 2nd, or 5th gear it doesn't naturally center anymore. So if i pull it out of 1st it will stay more to the left pointing towards me instead of centering and being straight up. I noticed this oddity soon after the notchy shifting.

The transmission fluid had been changed at 102k or so with GM manual transmission fluid 88861800. Around 103k I started noticing notchy shifts in 3rd and 4th. Now at at 104k and it's annoying me more. Fluid level is good.

Default Re: Saturn ion manual - awkward 3rd and 4th shifts

Transmission fluid is for lubricating all moving parts and have no real effect on shift feel in general. Mechanically, manual xmissions last almost forever with reasonable care. Wear items; xmission shift cables, linkages and plastic used in some shift mechanisms for the shift lever. External wear to manual xmissions; clutch disc, throwout bearing, pressure plate and clutch hydraulics (master/slave unit).
