Arrow Re: Most miles on a Saturn

I'll go the other way, my mother's 1993 Saturn SL2 had 58,700 miles on it when we sold it this week .

The guy that bought it from us said that the low mileage sold him on it, as well as the fact that I maintained it over the years.

I probably would have kept it and did all the needed work if the parts total for it (even with my discounts) wouldn't have started to edge into the realm of a new car. Of course, you cannot factor in your time when you do your own work (like many of us here), because when you net out the numbers, it might (on paper) seem cheaper to have someone do the work for you.

However, most of us (including me), don't roll that way . We do our own work....

Plus, my mother retired and wanted a new car, so we bought Chevy Sonic LT to replace it.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

"Replace?" You can't replace an "S" Series. Substitute for maybe, but never replace.

I have a 2000 LS-1 that has 147,000+ on the clock. It ain't sexy but it gets me there.

I'm only getting an average of 18MPG (70% highway, 30% city) -- that's awful -- I know V6 people that do better.

If anybody has a suggestion (short of buying another car) that would improve that, I'm all ears!

Is this the four cylinder or V6? (not familiar with the two letters and a number thing for the Ls)

Either way, some general tips..

* tire conditions: Are they to proper PSI? Are they wearing evenly and have been properly aligned?
* tune-up: when was the last time your spark plugs/wires were changed?
* fuel filter: I'm gonna guess this is like the 98-02 S-series with the pressure regulator into the filter... when was this changed last and was it a OEM, WIX, or NAPA unit?
* weight: is all unnecessary weight out of the vehicle?
* service engine soon/check engine (no idea if it's SES or CEL for Ls): is this on with the engine running? if so, get the codes (in P0XXX format) read and post back here with them. Get the codes and NOT the sales pitch/interpretation
* temp gauge: is this reading 1/4 line? If so, replace with the proper t-stat for the Ls

My 2002 L100 has 244,000 and is still running strong and smoothly. 34 mpg and nothing major replaced except coil pack and catalytic converter.

Bought a 2000 SL2 last summer with 40,000 original miles. Had original tires on it too. Now it is up to 48K

Mileage is updated after every thousand that passes by. The car passed 200K miles in February, '14. Only one part related to the engine has been replaced - the water pump. Oil changes are done as closely as possible to a 3,000 mile interval.

The odometer photo is in the thread linked below, message #158. The system won't allow me to upload the picture here since it's been done once before.

Some of these mileages are amazing. I've only got 120k on mine - low mileage considering it's almost 18 years old.

I joke with my 9 year old, telling her she's going to be the only kid in school driving the same car she was brought home from the hospital in.

The Sc1 I just picked up has over 270k miles.

So why'd I pick it up?

To put another 100k on it! (Or let it die trying... )

omg! this is brilliant! i'm counting down the miles to 200k in my '98 SL2. at one time i thought i could make it to 250k, but a recent accident has dinged my confidence. maybe... just maybe... i could manage 237,674-miles... if i'm very, very, very careful. what a beautiful goal! again, "miles to the moon" is a brilliant distance number!
