Default Shifter Problem This Morning! No 5th/R now.

1998 SL, original owner, 180K.

I backed out of the driveway on my way to work, no problem, and started driving.

Once I got up to speed, I sensed something funny with shifter feeling. Would not go into 5th so I drove to work in 4th at 3500RPM.

Long story short, the shifter will NOT go far right, so I can't get into 5th or Reverse.

Any obvious culprits??

You are probably due for a 21120497 , CONTROL,M/TRNS
And also a 21005846 , Transmission Control Cable
Those are a good place to start.
You can get a 21120497 from a salvage yard and rebuild it. Meaning, put new bushings in it and figure out how to tighten-up the nylon “ball” that the shifter pivots on (I don’t know how, but others do).
You see,...there are leaks in the slip-fit air ducting pieces that are located underneath the center console. The leaks allow unfiltered, gritty outside air to permeate every possible wear point on the shift mechanism.

Oil use is 1 ounce per 100 miles with ~230,000 miles on the engine

Thanks for the reply. I have to work, so I asked my mechanic to look at it. He did say the bushings are shot and shifter pivot was worn. He is hoping to fix it for me, but if it's too much $$$ I may have to do it myself this weekend.

There’s only one good reason to drive around in 4th gear: Access to beverage
