Default Why nots and what-ifs

Hello Saturnfans,

A member of another automotive forum posed some questions for discussion regarding the Saturn Z-body Chassis. He wonders why it was not more popular and why didn't GM take it and run with it instead of the J-cars, or even globally. It got me thinking and some others and I wonder what the Saturn Faithful think of the topic. I'll post his original question and ask you all what you think...

So, it is one of the most overlooked platforms GM had. Apparently, it had IRS, an excellent wheelbase-to-lenght ration and a set of 1.9 DOHC units to bolt on - back in 1991. So, why did GM even bother with updating the J-body, the Delta etc., not to mention why didn't they spread the Saturn engine accross the lineup prefering the dinky 122 engine?

Perhaps those of you in the know can answer those burning questions:

* was the platform designed to take only polymer panels, or were "steel" bodies possible without a major redesign
* what type of IRS did the Z-body have - any example of similar setup among GM vehicles?
* did the platform have any serious shortcomings which prompted GM to dump it after service in only one model?
* was the Saturn engine in any significant way unsuitable for more mainstream application?
* is there any commonality between the Z-body and other contemporary / previous / later GM platforms?

I'd guess that low cost is king and that the Saturn platform was much too expensive.
