Default Squeaking

I have noticed that when it get really cold outside, around zero, my car sounds like a squeaky mattress when I go over bumps. It doesn't make this sound at all when it is warmer out. My previous Saturn never made this noise. Does anyone know what is making this noise and how to fix it?

If it is like a rubber on metal squeaking then it will be the front sway bar to frame bushings. They will need to be replaced to get rid of the noise.

I have this exact problem but the sound always happens, not just when it's cold. A car guy I know says that it's likely the bushing needing lubricant but I need to change the sway bar bushing for a knocking thing anyway so if those bushings are the squeak as well that I'll kill two birds with one stone.

How many God forsaken bushing that go bad on a regular basis are on these cars, anyway? It's completely blowing me away that EVERY SINGLE ION OWNER in the entire world has to replace at least one set of bushings at some point. This is something you'd think you'd be reading about in a "worst car ****-ups of all time" list.

I have had no problems with my bushings so far, and mine's an 03 with 65k on it. It's really not that big of a deal, go buy a first gen. Neon and replace the head gasket, that one WILL leave you stranded on the side of a road.

You're saying you haven't experienced a single clunk or anything from any of your bushings so far? Hot diggidy damn, I think we found the exception to the rule! You have owned it its whole life right?

Default Re: Squeaking

So far I have not heard any thumps, clunks, squeaks, moans, or groans from my suspension (not counting that silly plastic thing that hangs down in front and scrapes on every slight incline into or out of a parking lot).

The cursed clutch pedal is another matter. It warmed up here and the f-squeak is back. My only solution is to move to siberia so I can drive my ION in peace. If I take it to the dealer I figure the odds are:

40% dealer claims not to hear squeak
40% dealer hears squeak but claims it is "normal" and useful for covering bushing noise

14% dealer claims to fix squeak, squeak returns next day
5% dealer breaks something while attempting to fix squeak and claims innocence

1% won the lottery, dealer fixes squeak with no hassle or irritation, hallelujah

...
Great Minds Think alike...

So do we!

I have had two Ions, an 03 3 Sedan and an 06 3 QC and both those bast ards squeaked like there was no tomorrow once it gets cold out. I haven't had the bushings done on the 06 since I got it because I have been living on the coast where it doesn't get cold enough. However, since I have come back to Manitoba, and it is currently -45, I have had enough! The squeak is bad and I too have been wondering how many sets of bushings they have to replace until they use new components. I had them done 3 times on my last one! It takes about a week and the squeak comes back. It is just crap parts they use on these autos in this case.
